Walmart out of filters?

Wow, I just hopped on Walmart's website. Accord is due for an oil change. They have no Supertech or Fram filters in stock. It cost me $21~ to do an oil change, lol. Welp, I guess I will be going to an auto parts store and have to pull my pants down to get an oil change kit.

It would be nice if they could get Premium Guard filters. I have been trying to get @Zee09 to go into the filter manufacturing business. The door would have been wide open for him.

I don't think any place like Walmart had enough warning of the First Brands failure to make moves to keep the supply of shelves seamless.

If Amazon and other Auto parts stores can still get filters there is no excuse for Walmart!
Amazon can't get filters anymore made by Fram or Champion Labs either. The question is how much foresight did Walmart have that all the filters they got from Fram and Champion Labs would vaporize.

You can get some pretty good package deals at the auto stores, I wouldn't despair. I got a Microgard Select and 5 quarts of Valvoline Restore and Protect for $39 at O'Reilly's last month.

Other places have pre-existing contracts/relationships which suppliers would feel obligated to fullfil first. And I doubt if they would feel it profitable to work their factories overtime to give product to a cut-rate customer like Walmart.

First brands filed in September 2025 so what’s that 7 months? They should have seen this coming. I actually thought that was why they tried the M&H stuff a year ago. First brands bonds were being downgraded for more than a year before that.

Just because a company files for bankruptcy doesn't mean they will ultimately go out of business. First Brands was later found to be way too deep into financial shenanigans to pull themselves out of the fire and recover without burning down to ashes. Then the sale came along and that couldn't have been predicted by anyone how that would pan out and the timeline if someone did buy the Fram/Champ Labs divisions. Walmart wouldn't have any insight to exactly how their filing for bankruptcy would pan out. Walmart can just stock more of the other available filter brands (or even stock other available brands) and expand those brands applications if not done already until the dust settles to get a new supplier for at least their SuperTech house brand.

Maybe but the writing is on the wall. They could continue - or not. Professional buyers know this and are supposed to have contingencies - even in the best of times. Its not about us, its a lost opportunity for Walmart - empty shelf space, disappointed customers. Thats what ultimately killed K-Mart, obviously at a larger scale.

^^^ I'm betting Walmart was a bit blind sided and is furiously working on a solution. They might have even started planning for it before anyone thinks, and it takes some time to execute a plan to cover the First Brands fiasco.

Easy to armchair quarterback what Walmart should have done. To be fair, while First Brands did declare bankruptcy in September 2025, it was a Chapter 11 reorganization type and not necessarily a rush to liquidation like a Chapter 7. FRAM and Champion did not stop production until February 2026. So it has only been two months and not seven months. A company like Walmart cannot even begin to negotiate short and long lead replacement suppliers until their current ones are in breach of contract or have dissolved as a going concern.
