I have to say that PepBoys is the biggest POS store out their and that Walmart of all places, has more to choose from then they do! I can't even buy micro fiber towells at PepBoys anymore! They are all polyester. Ridiculous.

BTW , the new 5qt Mobil 1 Jugs now say GF-4 and have a different look. ($22.74) It's been posted here before but I'd like to see a VOA of a bottle that actually says GF-4. The bottle I had was made on the 11.22.04, which is most likely GF-4 as I was told by a Mobil rep.

Also, I've noticed that Redline must be selling at Advanced Auto. The two stores I went into both had a depleted inventory. I surprised actually.

Other than the free M1 deal from Pep boys, I never go there. Just about everything is overpriced compared to WalMart. Hard to justify synth blends that approach the $3/qt price point.

I don't mind PBoys. The PBoys down the street from me actually does decent mechanical work. I don't rely on them for diagnostics, but tell them specifically what I need done, they do it, and no problems. They had to warranty a brake caliper once, and r/r with no hassle. I wouldn't take a car down to WalMart for any type of work. WalMart makes everybody look overpriced because of the way they squeeze their suppliers, and crappola pay and benefits for employees. Walmart has more choices? Didn't realize they expanded into hard parts and now offer brake pads, water pumps, hoses, belts, axles, calipers....

Better prices on some things, sure but...WalMart and oil/air filters??!!! Fram mainly, with a sprinkling of Motorcraft, and Super-T. At PepBoys, you can get Purolater filters, Royal Purple oil, uh, Mopeds (?), and they do run coupon specials all the time.

My take:

Many of the parts I bought at Pepboys were inferior/didn't work. I buy no parts there any more.

Their repair area is the vault of doom. I wouldn't go there in a million years.

I hate the store.

There are still enough independant shops and locally owned parts stores that I prefer to give them my money, they have plenty of selection. I know they do good work, carry quality parts, have knowledgable help and I help keep my neighbors and community in business. The difference in cost is less than the amount of taxes I have to pay to give walmart workers gov't healthcare.

I went to a Pep-Boys in Rhode Island (first mistake)shopping for tires. Got a big bait & switch routine on 225/60hr/16 tires. They advertised them in a big newspaper ad @$65...But they only had V rated tires in stock, which they claimed I "needed" anyway. They were Futura (Cooper) and only $105 each mounted and balanced. I walked out. But there was a 4 hour wait of people who did NOT walk out...What a Gold Mine. A local tire store in Hyannis fixed me up for $79 M&B included for H rated Kellys which I really like ('89 Allante).

All my pep boys experiences are nasty. I've even had a friend who had their engine blown by pep boys. Unfortunantly the jury couldn't fathom how a timing belt worked, so he lost the case.

All the pep boys by me have crappy selection and ****** cash register service. The only reason why I go there is if I'm at home (not at school) and I need oil filters for my Honda. It takes me more time to wait AT the cash register for someone to come ther than it does to park, get the part I need, laugh at the "performance" parts and leave the place.

I go to Pep Boys if Murrays or Autozone doesnt have what I want

I always call all 3 first though for prices and lately Autozone wins. Some of their brand names and countries of Origin (i.e. brake pads and rotors) are questionable, but hey with a lifetime warranty, i dont care if the brand name is "Big Bird" as long as I can get new pads and rotors in 20k miles im cool with it, haha.

As much as everybody p*sses on Pep Boys on here they did save me money and time by having the correct 02 sensor removal tool that nobody else had except if I could order it from Snap On Tools at 3X the price plus shiping and tax. Though I have to admit the store signs in Spanish and the help speaking Spanish are endearing to this old Anglo Saxon born in NJ

Back in 1993 Their was one Pepboys I liked. It was in Savanha Ga. They always had the parts I needed even for oddball imports! I have never found one since that was worth a darn. I used to buy Redline S-1 injector cleaner there amoung other things.

My friend actually worked at the Corprate HQ which is in Philthadelphia. He told me how poorly run that company was. It was a temp job for him.

Another thing is their service. They should NOT be doing things they claim they can do. Their mechanics don't know what they are doing and make things worse 1/2 the time. 3 people I know specifically had nothing but problems with them. I told them to stay away from going their and find a local mechanic or go back to the dealer. You migh pay more but at least they will fix the problem.

They also sell these ridiculous scooters/go-karts and stopped carrying simple things like micro fiber towels. I wish they would focus on the basics. We don't have a Murray's around here so I end up going to AutoZone or Advance Auto parts most of the time.

I only go there for the Pennzoil deals, buy 3 get 3 Mobil 1 or Redline S1. They are more interested in selling scooters and dune buggies than selling auto parts.

When I used to work in the Ford dealers, I referred to them as "Prep Boys" as the only thing they're technically capable of doing is prepping new cars.

Hey speaking of... I was at Wal-Mart tonite and bought some of that Motorcraft Synthetic Blend that everybody is all ga-ga for. I did compare Motorcraft Syn Blend to other Syn Blends and I see what the hype is. So I bought 7 quarts for the next oil change on my Envoy

This actually happend to me. Went into PeeBoys for
a qt of +3ATF 2.09 on the shelf. Rang up 2.19 at
the register and when I pointed out the error, this dipstick told me "oh well it rang up 2.19."

I'm glad it didn't come up 87.59. Jeeees. As there
was a line behind me and I was in a hurry this
jerk got away with one. Still PeeBoys owes me a dime. I'll Get it.

I think they have to give you the price on the shelf by law; all stores did anytime I had the problem.

BTW, I dislike PepBoys too (long lines, and counter people who know literally nothing); Autozone is so much better for parts. I got to Costco for M-1 and Walmart for SuperTech filters.

Many retailers here follow the Scanning Code of Practice. If an item scans for more than the marked price, you get a discount on the first item, up to a maximm of $10. I got a free bottle of GC once, that way. It was marked at $6.00, but scanned for $6.66.

I like Pepboys for the sales. Once in a while they have a good sale on pennzoil and sometimes Castol for under a buck. I've alos bought two compressors last year on sale. Didn't need two compressors, but the first on was to heavy to carry so I bought a much smaller one thats about 18 pounds. Their futura tire are garbage, at least the ones I've bought in the past.
