Walmart oil prices rising

Heading to WalMart now. They still had Mobil 5000 for $8.97/5 qt jug. That's only pennies over the Super Tech oil. My stash still looks good except for winter oil. I need to pick up some 5W30.

I hope it will eventually turn around. My wife and I may take advantage of the cheap SUV's. We need to tow our ATV's, I tow my Jeep to the trail, and my youngest is starting pre-school. My Wife needs to drag the other day care kids to drop him off three days a week. We're considering a Jeep Commander. Some of the prices we've seen are low teens with under 20K miles. That's less than half of new!

This is why I still say gas isn't TOO expensive. Our collective perceived NEEDS are still very often WANTs instead of NEEDS. I realize there are those that are really hurt by 4.00 per gallon fuel, but, to the vast majority of people in the USA, 4.00 per gallon fuel doesn't even interfere with pursuing our hobbies...even hobbies that burn more fuel.

I've been saying for years it would take 5.00 per gallon fuel to make a real change in fuel burning habits. As it turns out, fuel is being consumed at a slightly lower rate than the prior year...so, kudos to those that have begun to be more conservative with their burning...I'm impressed by the effort.

As others said, we can still do much better being stewards of the resource. But, despite the slight drop in fuel burning rate of late, I know the USA public enough to state that we have short memories, and if the cost drops a significant amount, we'll still be right back to our old ways. At least, that's what we've done before...and we certainly didn't seem to learn from it.

We need to upgrade our entire national energy infrastructure. We have too much population and the greens are standing in the way thinking they are saving the world as China and India pollute at a higher rate than the US. What fools.

Diesel is now over $5/gallon in CA. Some places as high as $5.69. If you need a people hauler, you can't beat a minivan like a Honda Odyssey. They have more room than SUVs and get much better fuel economy. You can argue with me that some SUVs have more room, but I don't think it's significant, if any. We test drove lots of larger vehicles when were were planning on getting a family car and in the end just couldn't beat the Honda Odyssey.

Well, it is a NEED, because that is the form of recreation my family enjoys. I pay to play like everyone else who enjoys motorized recreation. That doesn't mean fuel prices aren't high. Besides, its not like I ride every weekend (or even every month for that matter). I still NEED to get them there when I do go. If the forum greenies think playing Tiddly-winks at the kitchen table is fun, well, that's up to them.

Please tell me how buying a 4500 lb mini-van that averages 18 MPG (and much less pulling two tons of trailer) is better than a mid-size SUV like a Commander or Trailblazer that gets about the same mileage but can pull twice as much? Everyone is quick to poke fun at the soccer Mom in her SUV and they don't even know all the facts. Then they'll say buy a minivan or sedan that gets teens or low to mid 20's for mileage. That's a green solution. LOL back at ya.

Sorry, dude. I don't want to get too involved in this but eating is a NEED. Towing your ATVs is a WANT. It's something you can choose to do or not to do.

Oh OK... here we go with the you NEED to eat, but...

Obviously there is no arguement that everyone on Earth can survive eating rice and drinking water. Why don't we all ride bikes to work too. To those of you who take everything out of context, let me rephrase my family's requirements: To support our wasteful recreational WANTS, we require a gas guzzling SUV that can pull 7K lbs. While doing this, I will also have all the windows open and have the A/C on full blast...because I WANT to.

There are so many economical and environmental experts here, I'm surprised the world isn't a better place.

M1 went up to 23.74 but Pennzoil Platinum went down to 19$ for 5 gallon jugs...just about every other oil went up cept quaker state jugs for 9.27

All the "experts" here are why this forum has gone down the drain. Take everything a little more serious next time, why don't you.

It should be but so many people keep driving SUVs with the windows down and the A/C full blast hauling ATVs.

Maybe you're right, but the Odyssey has the potential to get better fuel mileage, especially with the new "3-cylinder shut-off" feature on the highway. I already stopped riding my dirtbike because it costs too much to haul it out to a place to ride. We used to ride down by Mesa Marin raceway, great place to ride, but they closed that down. Something about preserving the vegetation (weeds).

Anyway, I'm not completely ignorant to the environment. I try not to think about it though.

Zaedock, you're a fine member and nobody is hating on you nor even correcting you outright. Thinking critically about a "need" vs "want" is a simple philosophic look at decision making, a usefull skill in other areas of life too. That's the kind of feedback/analysis a person should actually appreciate getting from his group.

Don't worry, Zaedock, we can all be criticized for what believe are needs vs. wants. You're correct in stating a minivan is no Prius. I've been saying it for years. The only difference between a minivan and an SUV is interior layout and (typically) optional 4wd. Heck, my CR-V is just a jacked up awd wagon, basically, and I've still been criticized for it. People latch onto a term and run wild.

Truth be told, if you have a big family, especially if you have children small enough to require child or booster seats, you just about HAVE to have a minivan or SUV. I can just barely fit my three kids into the backseat of my 9-5 given all the apparatus they have to be strapped into. I sure can't tow anything with it. What might be a consideration is to buy an old truck specifically for towing, keep the minimum insurance on it, and then get the most fuel efficient vehicle you can find to taxi the family about for regular daily use.
