With the differences between stock at locations it makes me think just hit the auto part store instead.

I'll always check their inventory through the website. It's always been pretty accurate and it will even tell you "low stock" and in that case, I look for something else or skip going. Luckily, I've never had an oil change emergency.

The cost difference has become negligible too.

Not to me. O'Reilly (I can walk there) is $42 for Castrol Edge 5W-30 and WM is still $32. In my experience, WM is almost always $10 cheaper across the board for 5-quart bottles of name-brand oil.

It’s a little more than a few dollars. We’ve had a slew of formula changes with many oils loosing Dexos approval. Many of these oils had only two things going for them, cost and Dexos.

My Walmarts are pretty slim pickings currently. The worst of the base oil shortage is still to come.

A year from now several companies will have new US GIII and GTL plants operating. Newly completed/expanded Pipelines bypassing Hormuz will be operational. Chicken little will be sliding in synthetic motor oil and complaining the price didn't come back down. The only real shortage now is cheap deals.

Retailers and manufacturers have little incentive to return to the old pricing unless competition or excess inventory forces them to. And everyone in the supply chain have increased prices, so that makes it even harder for the finished product to come back down unless everyone in the supply chain cuts prices. Boiling the frog slowly as the saying goes. So as long as people keep paying higher prices, and there's not an inventory excess then oil prices won't ever come back down to what they were 3-4 months ago. Same thing happened with ammo.

It's been like this for over 100 years so your validation is irrelevant. These small spikes we see are very short lived and nothing to panic over.

We had this same panic in 2008 when the barrel of oil hit almost $150.00. Today it's about half that and yet the fear mongering still exists.

I know the news; US is the number one producer of crude and exporter of refined products. There is plenty of oil; the missing Dexos on the label is the noticeable issue; all the other qualifications are present.
How could a premium bottle of Big Oil like Pennzoil Platinum not be dexos suitable ?

My understanding is that the issue is that we do not have refineries capable of making Group 3 base oils yet which make up most synthetic oil. Pennzoil and everyone else is buying whatever Group 3 base oil they can get from wherever. Hence the lack of Dexos certification. A lot of oils on the shelf right now have undergone reformulation.

It's been talked about a lot in this forum on why motor oil prices are going up, and it's not really connected to the price of a barrel of oil. If things go more sideways and more facilities get destroyed in the middle east that produce base oils, then things could get even worse for oil jugs on the shelf.

We warned everyone to stock up in the spring with your favorite oils. Slim pickings now…..and more expensive.

What scares me more is these companies may never go back to the original formulas. Keep prices high while using whatever base oils……people are still loving Supertech without Dexos and at $28 a jug.

For me, 2 cars are still under warranty. One does a 6 month and 6k mile service. The other does a 6 month and 3-4.5k mile service. Once out of warranty, I would be more comfortable extending the other out to 6k and not wasting the money which would push me further out with my stash. My wife's car, I usually go by MM but the last change I stopped at 6k. Each car has at least 3 years' worth of oil changes not including the bay box, gallon of Amsoil SS and 2 jugs of Castrol EP I just got. To be honest, the CRV might be closer to 4-5 years. I think I have 5 more jugs of Kirkland and one more of VRP for that car. For the short term, the price increase does not affect me but if it stays high, it will. 3 cars, ~2 OCIs per car per year and $5-15 more per jug adds up quickly.

What I'm hoping for right now is that the price I was quoted for my cvt fluid change will still be $500 and not more.
