Since Safety Kleen bottles the stuff, and also has their own synthetic oil lineup (AMERICA'S CHOICE 100% SYNTHETIC) I highly doubt claims that it is produced by Petro-Canada. RonAKA where art thou?

I wouldnt have even known about AMERICA'S CHOICE 100% SYNTHETIC until I saw it listed on the API site. Also interesting to note is that Tech2000 Syn is offered in 3 viscosities: 0w30, 5w30 and 10w30. Safety Kleen America's Choice is also only available in those viscosities. I think it's pretty safe to say that ALL Tech2000 lubricants are S-K made. http://eolcs.api.org/DisplayCompanyInfo.asp?CompanyID=227097 more info

I called that Vulsay company that bottles the oil and they called me back and all they could tell me is that it is re-refined oil. I didn't know anyone re-refined oil into a synthetic. Its good stuff at any rate, its in my truck right now.

Sounds like Safety Kleen's running used motor oil through progressively severe hydrocracking stages to achieve Group III commercial end product paraffinic base oils. Additize it properly and the result should compare favorably with Castrol Syntec and many other "full synthetic" finished motor oils.

Could used synthetic oil still be called synthetic after it was re-refined using the normal process used to re-refine mineral oils? But I don't think they are actually doing this.

I have trouble with the assumption that the Safety-Kleen, Canada facility at Breslau, Ontario is producing Grp III basestocks from re-refined motor oil.

Here's a Listing of Safety-Kleen Base Oils . Note that the highest VI index base oils are 108 VI.

Also, until we have news to the contrary, a 0w30 needs to have at least some PAO mixed in meet the 0W rating. So the America's Choice 100% Synthetic 0w30 is most likely a blend of base oils purchased by Safety-Kleen from a outside source.

In this case, Safety-Kleen is simply performing as a blender & packager.

So, I doubt that the synthetic motor oils in the Safety-Kleen, Canada line-up are blended from re-refined oils.

good points! considering its overall processing, it would only make sense to call it a GrpIII+ considering from beginning to end, it has been processed on more separate occasions than a virgin oil. the problem people might have with that is "GrpIII+" would imply that its somehow better than GrpIII

I don't know where it is, but there is a post on this topic somewhere where a couple of people have called BOTH Petro-Canada, and Safety Kleen, and have confirmed that the Canadian Tech 2000 100% Synthetic oils ARE re-packaged Petro-Canada Synthetics. Maybe this has changed, but i would be suprised if a re-refining company like S-K would go to the effort of re-refining used oil to Grp. III specs, as opposed to producing group II and chucking in a cheap add pack.....

Just to be picky...

1) SK is a major oil refiner in Korea, exports Group III, and not related to Safety Kleen.

2) The only advantage to re-refined oil is an energy savings in the refinery. If the oil isn't re-refined it'll be used as boiler fuel or in asphalt, and if used oil isn't available, virgin oil will be used.
