Looked over the oil at Wal Mart tonight and noticed the Havoline is still full price. But what caught my eye was the Wal Mart brand (Super Tech?) full sythetic GF-4 oil for $13.85 or so for a 5 quart jug. That's $2.77 per quart? Is this oil group 4 or 5? If so, how can they sell it so much cheaper than the other brands?

Depending on the OCI, I'd use the Supertech syn but if your going to be 5k or below, use any SM oil unless the manual states otherwise.

Plus PP has a better basestock shell's Slack Wax. A better additve pack. Also you can extend your OCI. But it's all relative on what you want to do.

Both times that I went to NYC (780 Miles) using Supertech Syn in my S-10, I returned to feel a rough idle. The moment I changed the oil, a smooth idle returned. Prior to those two trips, I used Castrol on trips to NYC & no rough idle afterwards. Now that S-10 sees Platinum with two free OCIs next - due to 10 quarts of free Maxlife synthetic... via their rebate plan early this year.
I do a ton of mountain climbing on those trips. The Supertech can't seem to take the stress I guess. My Colorado's been to NYC afew times with Mobil 1 and VSOT on-board. Not a trace of consumption from that vehicle -- yet I'm changing to another brand next due to the Group III claims. Amsoil, Schaefers or GC will be next.
While I do not dispute your experience, I do not see how oil can cause a rough idle, unless it is really bad, as in defective, or contaminated. Do you have any thoughts on how this can happen?
Also the walmart oil seem to have discounted additive levels.
Maybe that is why they can sell it for less than $3.00 per quart?

I suspect it's common GM coolant dilution when used in these long trips. In my case, I see certain oils withstanding/operating normally for longer periods/more miles than other certain oils. In my situation, it was Syntec clearly showing less friction than Supertech.
I've always been a believer that name brands outperform house brands that are made by name brands - but given less anti-wear & cleaning goodies inside the jug to keep the price down.
