Wal-Mart encounter today

Went to get some oil and a guy came in the isle and grabbed 4 large jugs of Quaker 10w40 conventional. I commented to him as to what he was running 10w40 in, and he said "everything". He said he uses it in all his cars, lawn mowers, and street bike. He said that all that crud about thinner oils was stupid and that he "knows what works" and has used it for years.

When I told him about cold flow properties, he said that he comes from Northern Michigan and that is what his whole family has used up there for years & years. He shook his head as if to be irritated that I even asked and then grabbed a few Fram filters and went on his way.

Just thought I'd share the story

Not untypical. We really know what's best. I'll bet he doesn't got much over 200,000 mile out of his vehicles and we get 205,000. haha

10W-40 oil and Fram filters are not bad products. Yes, he's a little set in his ways, and his car will get marginally lower fuel economy, but they will last just as long as any other car.....

If I was buying oil at Walmart and some self appointed expert interjected I would be cranky too. I buy what I like and has worked good for me. I would never give anybody my opinion in the oil aisle unless it was a woman buying that SA stuff. Then I would point her to the supertech which is 20 cents more.

You can't fault the guy for at least changing the oil. I would happily run a fram filter and 10w40 QS in any of my cars. It's "good enough"

His engine will probably be perfectly fine on thicker oil + FRAM and last to 200,000+ miles, lol.

We worry too much about oil sometimes.

How do you explain to someone that GC is thicker than any other 30W out there? I tell folks that i use GC and they think im nuts for using a 0W30 in this Texas heat.

That would have been interesting as I always carry, usually concealed but not always. But then again I seriously doubt I would have said anything. He can pour ketchup in his engine for all I care.

Bingo!!! He also was courteous enough to explain that this works for him, so why is it so unusual that a person wants to run a 10w-40 or any other oil for that mtter? Let's not judge a person by his/hers oil choices.

I also don't see anything wrong with Fram. It seems like a lot of people on this site associate Fram users with people that don't care about their cars.

Wondered the same thing about Fram. Granted there are better filters, but I've used them for years with no ill effects. Also I'm a firm believer that if a product is very lacking in quality or otherwise defective most of the time, sales will fall to the point its taken off the market.

A guy came in today at work (Napa) and bought 6 quarts of Pennzoil Conventional 10w40, and had me look up an oil filter for a 2000 F150. I'm assuming the oil was for the same vehicle. Not the oil I would've chosen for that vehicle, but I kept my mouth shut, rang him up, and sent him on his way.

i was at wal-mart this afternoon also. picked a jug of 5W-20 semi synthetic motorcraft and a FL-1A oil filter, a new oil drain pan and a tube of shell rotella grease. it beat the heck out of whatever was going on over at the grocery side.
