Back in the 80's I was reading about counterfeit aircraft parts in Time. They had a photo of a particular genuine Pratt & Whitney replacement part alongside the counterfeit. The boxes looked almost the same and probably no more different than you'd expect from normal printing variations. The parts looked nearly identical. The main difference was that the genuine part was considerably stronger, but that's not anything that can be detected visually or without some sort of destructive testing.
