W116 300sd Mercedes Battery

Own a 1979 300sd (w116) Mercedes and looking for a solid battery.
Sears offers a Diehard AGM battery for 186.99 (3 year full replacement warranty) and are willing to take another $10 off.
There is a current promotion for the battery.

My other choice is a battery from Costco for $132.00, 3 year full replacement warranty

Is an AGM battery a good choice?
I don't know much about this types of batteries.

Please advise

As long as the CCA are same, Id go with the AGM especially if its a diesel. They usually last on average 6-8 years.

I have a 2012 date code Johnson Controls Autocraft Gold in my w123. Starts it up after sitting all winter with only one, six-amp charge for a few hours sometime in February. The clock even kept time.

Beware the Bosch parts are calibrated to run 13.8 volts, a little too low for a maintenance-free battery and its slightly different chemistry. Good idea to throw a charger on every other month or so to top off.

For a diesel I'd consider whichever has the highest cranking amps, especially if it has a history of being reluctant to start. Whatever you choose, ensure your charging system is functioning properly. My car killed a nice battery in less than 3 years because of a weak alternator chronically undercharging it at below 13 volts.

The alternator on a w116 is t going to put out a particularly high voltage, and therefore may result in a poor charge, especially on an AGM.

Ive had great luck with the white MB OE batteries in group 49 size in my w123 cars.

Ended up purchasing a Mercedes Genuine Battery. I was going to get the Costco battery but for 40 more dollars I decided to go with the Genuine battery.
