VW transmission fluid

Hello, What transmission does a 2002 VW Jetta require? I don't know which transmission option this car has. I found the part number of the "security cap". OIM 321 Y35B. Fortunately Dorman makes one too so you don't have to patronize a company which lies to its customers. It's simply a plastic cover for the fill hole. It must be replaced after you break the original to get into their "sealed unit". What a foolish idea. Sorry to vent but the insistence of the parts guy that the fluid wasn't serviceable disturbed me. He was such a bland robot. At least he came around. Thanks for any info. Kira

As far as I know there were 2 automatic transmissions for that generation. There is the 4 speed automatic (01M) and tiptronic 5 speed (09A?). I assume you have the 4 speed automatic since you mention the security cap. I honestly would not worry too much about the red security cap, its not a big deal if you break it and not reinstall it. The actual fill plug is seen after removing the security cap thing. I broke the red security cap on mine and didn't get a new one. I would however be careful when removing the fill plug, don't want to break the fill tube.

As for fluid the best thing to use OEM fluid but many people have used multi vehicle atf and works fine. So its up to you what you want to use. I used Pentosin ATF which is supposedly the company that makes the OEM stuff, next time I change the fluid I'll probably use multi vehicle atf.

Also while you are at it I would change the differential fluid as well. There is no drain plug so you have to pump the fluid out from the check/fill hole by removing the speedometer drive. It takes a little less than a quart of 75W-90 gear oil.

Overall its not too difficult to work on. In a way its actually relatively easy. There are only 4 bolts holding the pan. The most difficult is probably checking the fluid level. The car has the be running and transmission temperature needs to be 35-45C, then open the check plug to see if it overflows. You would need a Vag-Com to read the transmission temperature. Some people say you can feel the pan or use ir thermometer, 35-45C would be about warm to the touch. In total I used about 3L (3 and 1/4 quart) of fluid.
