VW - TDI - oil change recommendations

Personally, I feel that you cannot "CARTE-BLANCHE" have the same intervals for everyone! This should be based on how the vehicle is being driven. EG: on the freeway at 70mph for the entire interval, the engine is much happier at 10k OCI than if it putted around town at 25mph for 10k OCI!! I feel that the individual must determine their own type of use. ALL owners manuals have different OCI scheduals..the 10k for "normal" driving (which seems to be about 5% of the population) and a much shorter interval for "severe service", or stop n go, short runs, etc.
If you don't believe this, invest in an oil sampling routine and watch fuel dilution!!

Based on the hundreds of TDI used-oil test results I've seen posted here or at TDI Club, the 10k-mile OCI seems to work for about 90% of owners. Poor test results after this interval usually indicate a mechanical problem, and are rarely the result of city vs highway driving.

With the right oil, and all-highway driving, many owners could extend to 15k miles without a problem. Quite a few of us stick with a 10k-mile interval simply because it's a round number that's also safe.

Those new VW diesels are expensive engines. If I owned one, I'd bite the "oil bullet" and change the initial fill at 3000 miles and every 7500 miles thereafter. Or you can change it at 3000 miles all the time and know that your oil is never, ever going to be "worn out" per se.

Or you might also read many of the used-oil tests on the factory fill, after either 5k or 10k miles. I have seen one bad set of test results, but apparently the owner did not follow the guidelines for using no more than a 5% biodiesel blend (B05).

Oddly, I found these discussions while searching on 507.00 to find the best price.

A few errors in the preceding holy wars:

Only the MB emission system uses the 'cat-[censored] solution' (its a play on words sort of)

The 507 spec for vw CBEE CJAA motors, like the 505.01 spec in the BRM motor has more to do with the injector system - wrong oil, moving parts in the injector grab, said previously moving parts, OR the parts they were moving against eject from the block with curious force. My 2 VWs (06 BRM, 10 C motor) are the only vehicles I have ever owned where the manual states that severe injury or DEATH may result from the wrong motor oil.

as heated as the arguments get here, no one has ever played the death card. (granted the warranty language considers the possibility of someone having their forehead up agin the motor when said parts eject, but VW does not often underestimate the acheivable stupidity of the american consumer)

As for the oil, just goto the old tdiparts.com (now IDparts.com since tdi-parts.com came into being) and order up some fine pento, motul, Ineo, lubro or casto(l).

Personally I got the best mileage on my BRM from the Elf (aint found it in 507 yet), I have no idea on the c-motor yet as I just expired my 3/36 freebie session and dunno what they poured in. (hint: the emission warranty is way longer than 3/36)

In other words, do what they say, when they say it, and do not argue ('they' being the manual and info center) Its prolly not an accident that the c-motor J is the current world record holder for highway cycle miles (58+mpg at 60mph average)

This is not a joke, The manual actually says using the wrong motor oil may result in death. I am wondering if this is an engineering or legal department initiated comment. Crazy.

If not for all the warnings and alerts and cautions included for legal reasons, the owners manual would 1/3 the size and far more useful as a reference.

The problem with "crying wolf" about the possibility of death if you use the wrong oil, is that people will also ignore other warnings that might actually make sense.
