VW GTI - EV

I would say my guess would be $70,000. Just like Hyundai had multi affordable “N Series” performance cars at $33,000-36,000 then dropped all but one. Enter EV N Series EV. $65 to $75,000. Kills 90% of sales in one model year.

The problem is that VW isn't doing anything like what the Ioniq 5 N is. The GTI is still just front wheel drive and not fast by EV standards. If this thing is a dime over $40k(and it won't be that cheap) it'll be a massive flop.

Yea, the Golf R is knocking on $50K.
Unfortunately VW dropped the manual transmission option as they "assumed " that the more stringent Euro emissions were going into effect which they didn't. Even if they did that didn't effect North American buyers where 48-52% were sold/optioned with the manual transmission. The manual option only produced
.2kg more CO2 per km.

The interesting thing is that you can't order a GTI in the US. They're just made and show up. They always made a 50%/50% split of DSG and manual. They always sold. All of them. I don't think that would have ever changed if they kept making the manual.

The only performance manual VW available for the 2025 model year is the Jetta GLI, but it's a US only version made in Mexico like the previous GTI.

Back when I sold vehicles for a VW dealership most of the GTI's we received were manuals.
From VW they produced dsg and manuals in batches. My biggest complaint is that the local family owned dealerships are being swallowed up by conglomerates making it difficult for small dealerships to survive. The VW dealership that I worked for had been family owned since the 60's from what it sounded like. I had a customer come in that wanted a two door golf with no sunroof and the plaid seats. She found one at another dealership an hour away. They wouldn't trade it to us. The other VW dealership gave her an extra 2k on her trade and an additional 1k off sticker which the sales manager said we couldn't match.

Ever since the DSG was released it's been 50%/50%. Whether those deliveries were even or not is another thing, but that's been the officially released build numbers since the beginning of the DSG. The brand has had some issues through the years and it's pretty common that VW progresses and then massively regresses when they get traction. The brand has never been consistent. It's part of their heritage at this point. 😂

VW did really weird stuff. Back when I sold cars apparently VW offered a hybrid Touareg which they should have gone all in on. I bet you're more likely to see a Ferrari in LA than a hybrid Touareg. Then VW made the weird decision to only have a few specialist dealerships service them not all dealerships have the ability to service them.

I've thinking about getting back into a car again after powertrain warranty is up on the Colorado. Jetta GLI and Model 3 have my attention. Jetta GLI is a nice car for the money. Even the Jetta Sport isn't bad with the 1.5L T.

Complexity is one of the problems with multiple drivetrains. Dealerships need requisite service personell, and if the product mix is low on the hybrids, or whatever, it can be costly. Parts procurement adds to the complexity.

This is true of any manufacturer.

So 100k for a compact hatch?
The $90k was wild speculation in this thread. This car needs to be no more than $40k. It definitely won't top $60k. If would have to be an AWD R model to get there. If it's $60k I can have the top level Model 3 Performance for less than that. It's not even a contest which I would pick and I really like VW.

I'm sure mid 250 miles like other VW products and with it being a compact car it's going to be a relatively small battery.
Ouch. I suspect the gas model goes further.

As did the diesel versions - much further.

The gas version of the current car has a 13.2 gallon tank. I regularly got 350 miles on 10 gallon fill ups. I would think the EV would be in the 230 range to be honest. The last e-Golf was around 150 miles based on the same body style GTI I had. Even if the floor is fully filled with batteries it'll probably be in the 50kWh capacity range or less.
