VW Automatic Emergency Braking

We just received a class action lawsuit letter on VW of America AEB System. Is this a scam or what? We have never received a recall letter from VW of America. While I don’t particularly like the system, I can recall one incident where it caused me some concern. It activated during a driving rain storm. Evidently, the radar detector was fooled by the driving rain. All of the dash lights came on and braking was applied.

I got the same letter. If I understood it correctly there was a possibility of reimbursement if you had paid to have the system fixed and that was about it.

Typical class action, the lawyers will make bank, those affected will receive little or nothing.

I had two VeeDubs with it but never a problem for me personally and it saved my bacon once or twice.

2020 Tiguan has it. No issues, even in driving rain. Except when it scares the daylights out of me pulling into the garage after washing it. Activates at anything above 2MPH when the sensor is "cold" and goes into full panic stop mode. Once sensor stabilizes, it just gives audible warning as normal. Wife has had a few front enders and I'll take my chances with it vs. her collecting the rear bumper of the car in front of her.

I've never had an issue with my 24' GLI but I should check to see if it's actually on or if my car even has it being a stick.

Until you get rear-ended by a truck that can’t stop, because they didn’t anticipate your stop, because there was no reason to stop.
Until a child runs into the street unexpectedly. You don't anticipate that either, do you? You're supposed to keep a safe following distance to account for possible emergency's ahead of you, especially in pouring rain.

A car that randomly brakes for no reason is a hazard to traffic behind it.

Quit denying that.

I'm saying that vehicles that follow too closely are a hazard to traffic in front of them, for whatever reason. Can't you understand that?
No, your point was that a system failure of unnecessary braking was better than a system failure of missed braking.

I am saying that both are undesirable.

Both carry risks.

In my situation, I wasn’t following too closely. The system identified the pouring rain as another vehicle.

Yes, both are undesirable, but failure of missed braking means you hit someone in front of you. Unintended braking only causes an accident if someone is behind you and following too close for conditions. Since this situation is most likely in rain, people behind should keep a greater following distance anyway.

I'm sure this system has helped some, but it has its own failure points. My fear is that some will come to rely on this system but not understand its limitations (like not working in the rain) yet "need" this system working.

It's better to be a better driver instead. Yeah I know, no choice now, these systems are mandated.
