I have a 2018 Golf R that i use year round here in Northern Ohio...I am fairly well versed on most things "oil" however I am scratching my head trying to choose a winter oil for my R. Would prefer a 0w30 or doesn't it matter for my climate ? Currently running Castrol 0w40 and OCI of 5-6000 miles. Suggestions ?

I would just stick with what the sticker under the hood says. I believe it's 0w30 with a 504 approval, yeah?

The 0 weight will be just fine for the winter. From my experience, the Euro 5w40s that you find in stores tend to be on the thinner side of the 40 weight, bordering on a thick 30 weight. So like a 5w30+ really. Yes, I'm making up my own oil thicknesses don't hate.

I think either one is fine, but personally, I'd just stick with whatever the manual/sticker says. Charles, AKA The Humble Mechanic (who is a VW tech) addresses this issue at 1:40 in this video.

Castrol Edge 0W30 is IMO still best Euro oil out there. But, it goes for $56 for 6qt on Amazon.

Edge 0W-30 is $7.37 per quart at walmart.com, which is just under $45 for six quarts if you have to have it and want to save some $$.

Edge 0w30 is not a VW 504 I see no reason to pay more for it over the Castrol 0w40 you are already using.

Golf R can use 502 or 504 per OP subject line.

I see no reason to deviate from Edge 0W-40. It is proven to perform well and priced right. I was offering a less expensive Edge 0W-30 option than Amazon, that is all.

I'm using Mobil1 0W30 ESP in my '19R. It's $5.49 at Napa right now.

In '19, they changed the requirements just a bit, so so that 504/507 0W30 is the specified oil. Not a ton of options out there that meet the spec. Hard to beat at this price. Pretty sure this is what's in the VW bottles as well now that they switched to Mobil.

That Napa deal is smokin' for a VW 504 oil. Those are often 10 to 12 bucks a quart. I might pull the trigger on that for an over the winter OCI run.

It's so goofy that they require the 504 approval AND a viscosity - really, any 504 meets the requirements. This "and" business has caused a lot of confusion with R and 3.6 Atlas owners!

Yeah I know, but on Amazon if you check often, could stumble on coupon. Last 6pack I got, last month, was $24.
But, it takes time to stumble upon it.
