The EuroNCAP classifications just don't correspond accurately with the North American ones. The 4dr Golf V is now 10 inches longer than the IV platform and weighs just under 3,000lbs. How can that be accurately classified as "compact/C-Klasse" in Europe?
BTW: Last time I rented in Frankfurt, the following were Budget offerings...
Economy: Lupo
Compact: A2 (discount w/man), A3 (intermediate w/man), A3 (premium w/AT)
Standard: Golf V (discount w/man), Bora (intermediate w/man)
Full Size: A4 (various flavors)
Premium (onward & upward): A6...

The point is that the "Super Rabbit," with it's new proportions and in-need-of-a-diet weight lends itself more to a standard/mid-size automobile. I think the reason it's still being considered a compact is solely due to the hatchback design.
3,000lb cars are not compact by any means of the imagination.
BTW: Who in their right mind is going to be fooled into upgrading to a Golf V from an A3? Apparently Budget doesn't understand the scam they're supposedly taking part in...

Vehicle classes are not defined with absolute clarity in Europe. Size is not necessarily the decisive factor. Engine displacement and vehicle price weigh in, too.
For example, in Germany (Sorry, I will only talk about what I know) vehicles are classified like this:
Leichtfahrzeug ("light vehicle" < 2.8 m): CityEL, TWIKE. Those have often only three wheels.
City Car ( < 3.5 m)
Kleinstwagen ("micro car" < 3.9 m):
VW Lupo, VW Fox, Ford Ka, Toyota Yaris, Mini (old)
Kleinwagen ("small car" < 4.2 m):
Polo, A2, Corsa, Colt, Fiesta, Clio
Kompaktklasse/Untere Mittleklasse ("compact car/lower middle class" < 4.6 m):

The Scion tC with a 2.4 I4 is also EPA rated close to the VW 2.5 at 23/30 Manual 23/31 Auto. I'll bet you wouldn't get that if you flogged it. So, displacement + heavy foot = low MPG. No surprise.
Critic: This is why you should get a 1.5 Fit or 1.8 Vibe/Matrix. For high MPG there's no replacement for small displacement.

My 1.8L Vibe AWD w/AT averages about 27mpg w/mostly city driving. I imagine a 2wd Vibe/Matrix w/5spd would get 30-33mpg in similar conditions. And there's always the 5spd Corolla which should get upper 30's/mpg (BIU would be the expert on that).

True. If I put in 10k/yr, 22MPG compared to 28MPG is about a $250/yr difference with gas at its current prices.
I'll have to decide how important $250/yr is to me, considering that I'm planning to spend nearly $1000 in dance related stuff alone.
I looked at a classmate's 06 Jetta VP today. The rear seat looks roomy...
Just for kicks. I looked on MSN Auto for a brief synopsis of CR's review of the Jetta and Civic. The Jetta was ranked 2nd or 3rd, Civic was ranked first.
But CR stated that the Jetta has better performance than the Civic, at the expense of about 4MPG. 28MPG overall for Civic, 24 MPG overall for Jetta.

Since you brought it up, from this utility aspect, you will prefer the room in a hatchback with the rear seats down (or a full size truck with a bench seat). Get a hatch! Also, party wagon = BMOC.

The only Golf I "might" be interested in is the Cross, and I don't know if they'll offer it here. The Golf is just so blah.
I would buy a used Audi A4 Avant before a new VW Ralf.
