I have a 2002 VW 1.8t w/84,000 miles, been using mobil 1 since day 1, 0w40 for the last 4 years or so. So far, so good, but am wondering if there is something better out there? Also, what could happen if I use a synth. oil that is not on VW'S list of 502.00 approved oils?
Thanks in advance for any input.

Like screwing the same women your whole life, you wonder what other women are like. Same for using same oil. I have same engine as you. This oils works well and I recommend you stick with it. I have strayed off the path into exotic German oils only to come back to this oil, and regret that I did stray. For the price, performance, and availability, this oil is hard to beat. Exceptions might be Rotella T 5W-40 (cheaper) or Mobil 1 5W-40 Turbo Diesel Truck (possibly better at least in warmer months).

I use Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40. I have had no troubles with it.

I'd consider Castrol Syntec 0w30 (a.k.a., "German Castrol" or simply "GC"). Many here (including I) use it in Audi/VW 1.8T engines with great results.

I used GC all the time in my old 1.8T all year 'round. Pretty subjective information here but I FELT like the vehicle was smoother running GC versus anything else that I ever used. My two cents' worth...

From the Amsoil site:

2002 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT 1.8L 4-cyl Engine Code AWM Turbo

Engine Oil
Grade 1......SEO[1]
Synthetic 5W-40 European Engine Oil
All Temps......5w30, 5W-40, 0W-40

Since your engine is known to be a "sludger" you need to pick your oil and oil change interval very carefully to be able to maintain your 8 year unlimited mileage warranty.

Also from the info on this product "It is recommended for European and North American gasoline or diesel vehicles requiring any of the following worldwide specifications:.... Volkswagen 502.00, 505.00, 505.01." So Amsoil will provide their warranty as well. Make sure the other oils you consider will also meet these requirements.
