Because I've got nothing but free time working 76 hours a 7 day week 😳

My sister's Taurus decided to do nothing but click after parking in front of our house today

Tapping the starter didn't make a difference

They're known to get oil soaked with time, and after 16y/67k, it was coming 🤷‍♂️

After my poor experience with a Motorcraft reman alternator, I'm hesitant to go for a Motorcraft reman starter

These are my options (+Motorcraft and Denso reman)

I've got a local Advance and AutoZone too

What's the least junky these days?

Thanks,
Mike.

That sound is usually from a weak battery or corrosion at the battery cable connections. Or maybe a starter solenoid. I wouldn't expect a 67K starter to fail.

Battery is sub 1 year old, connections clean and tight
Tried a jump pack, then a battery charger, no change

Solenoid on this design is not serviced separately?

Take that milage figure with a grain of salt, once you add NYC coefficient to the formula, it might as well be 167k

How many 67k cars do you know of with rotted out exhaust, rotted out brake lines front to back, size 14 size boot hole in the passenger footwell?

Oh, and I just found out it needs both front wheel bearings

She's been complaining of it being hard to start for the past several months, intermittently

And it would never act up on me

I found a failing alternator (original), and I thought that would fix it

Now its DOA, acting up directly in front of me

I'll break out a multimeter and make some checks, but going on this chain of events, it's probably gonna need one anyway

Apparently putting the oil filter right above it, with no shielding or sealing isn't good for it's longevity

Just saying...

Some of the pros on here appear to like Bosch rebuilds

Update.

Swapped in a TYC new starter from RockAuto, $91.66 later
$35 of which was FedEx overnight ⏳
Starts super fast now, reliably
12v applied to the old oil soaked factory unit results in nothing
You needed an 8/10/13/14mm sockets, and a flex head 3/8
Didn't take me more than 45 minutes
Maybe consider some clear silicone around the seams to keep oil out?
But it's got a lifetime warranty, and I doubt this car will see 100k
Built 11/05, currently sits at 68,252
