I hit VTEC (or was it VTAK?) in the urgent care the other day.

Getting up and having one of the sensors fall off of your chest is a good way to get the whole team in your room.

Wow, GM didnt have variable valve stuff in their engines yet? Im a bit surprised at that. I dont have it in my 2.0L low inertia LP turbo saab, but I was under the impression that all that showed up with the DI turbo unit like seen in the Regal and others.

GM has had variable valve TIMING, also generally known as cam phasing. But this is their first implementation (that I know of) of variable valve LIFT (and by nature, also timing and duration and overlap and all that other good stuff that can only come with using a second cam lobe).

I think the Chevy version with it's simpler design could work well.
Still, it is a lot of parts/ complication to help out cruising economy a little.

1 mpg is huge for a volume seller like the Impala or the Malibu, especially in an engine that will power a fair chunk of those cars. Engineers do all sorts of crazy things for 0.5 mpg or 0.1 mpg to help CAFE averages, so a 1 mpg bump with an already-proven and cost-effective technology is like hitting the jackpot.

All I can say is my friend Neil's 2013 malibu with the 4 banger is one sweet little car!

I was completely blown away with the little thing, it's a great car design with a lot of features and a classy look.

Yes, you are right.. gleaning another 1MPG nowadays IS a lot.
I am not a fan of Honda's little pins that stick out and actuate the lobes. II like the rotating cam thing the Chevy seems to use.

Many people probably thought that about Honda VTEC yet it turned out to be a trouble free technology for them.
