VSOT Experts -

Is VSOT advantagous to add to mower engines that have 15w-40 Delo 400 ?? What all types of engines would benefit from VSOT ??

I'm not a fan of VSOT...

To me it appears to be a huge slug of polymeric VI index improver, with a bit of ZDDP added in for the "engine protection" feature.

I used it about 2 years ago, when some members were reporting fuel economy advantages with VSOT. Poured it in at idle, about 70F degree temp in my garage & the engine just about killed!

Also, have viewed a couple of UOA's with VSOT added, and have not perceived any performance advantage from the use of this additive.

Just my

Most new vehicles will die when the oil fill is removed from a running engine due to the crank case breathing design.

"Why" does Valvoline want us to pour VSOT in with the engine running...???

Good question. I would think they would say engine HOT. My guess:

If you pour it in a stone cold engine then go to start it, you might find the thickness clogging some of the oil return passages in the head or worse. This could cause a backup of oil in the valve cover, or improper lubrication of parts that are blocked by the cold VSOT.

I really wouldn't worry about the engine running (in fact the fan may blow a string of VSOT around and make a small mess), just get the engine good and hot, shut it off to pour it in, then immediately fire it back up and drive for a couple miles. Then you can safely shut down and leave it because the VSOT will have mixed with the oil.

This is basically what I do. Only difference is I'll dump in about 1/2 of what I want to add after things have had a few minutes to warm up, basically a couple trips around the block and after checking for leaks. Then I'll run the eng. for 2-3 min, shut off, add the balance and restart for a couple min.

I've found that it takes several miles to get VSOT mixed in real well, this is judging by the sound of the engine when idling and right after initial startup.
