I am new to this forum, I tired to do a search, What is VSOT?
I have read a few post where people recommend adding it to your motor oil.

Thanks for a reply.

It's real thick, has lots of moly and zinc. DO NOT dump the whole bottle in like they say (unless you have a 10 qt. sump!) go two oz. per qt maximun (I use 1.5). Stuff will take your oil way out of grade.

I don't understand the point of using this (VSOT) if you use a quality oil? Every owner's manual I've ever looked at says not to use oil additives, so I would think you wouldn't use this unless there was a problem. If you don't think your oil is doing a good enough job, why not just switch to an oil you trust?

What am I missing?

AFAIK, you can't get VSOT anymore. The only places that I know of that used to carry it (AAP & WM) have not had any for months now.

I buy mine from Pep Boys...the only place around here that has it. I use it in only one of my cars, in which it magically cured the oil burning that had plagued it since it was practically new. I use about 1/4 bottle per oil change...that is all that was needed. I suspect that the car had a stuck oil ring that was freed up by the VSOT.

Your not missing anything. A good oil has all the additives it needs. Oil additives are a gimmick and a waste of money. If you do have a problem they can help and cover up the problem, but not cure it.

As much as I love valvoline I wont buy their oil additives because they simply are not needed.

Haven't we had this discussion before, schwartr88? Zddp and moly additives aren't there to cover up or mask any problems. They are antiwear additives AND in the case of zddp, antioxidants. Some of us have cars which spec the older oils which were heavier in zddp. Your options for getting high zddp these days are diesel oil, redline, or zddp additives. If I can buy Supertech and add a can of VSOT or SLOB, it's no different than say Rotella and may be cheaper.

Viscosity Index Improvers and/or brightstock additives advertised to "stop smoking" or "stop leaks" are your cover up additives. Don't lump all additives in the same boat.
