VSOT & MLEP Use

just wondering how to use this stuff! i want to use it with Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 to thicken it a little and add a good dose of Moly!

its for use in my ford ranger 4.0 sohc, w/ 5qt. fill.

so how do i do the math on this to find final viscosity and moly content?

5oz of VSOT to 5qts of M1 correct?

also, i am having trouble finding VSOT around here if i dont find it at NAPA today, i will have to use Maxlife Engine Protector. any input on this MLEP? same qualities of VSOT?

also thinking about using it in the wifes car (2003 kia rio 28,000miles). but kind of being cautious about it because it only takes 3.5qts. so i may not use anything in her car. ill have to see how it likes being switched over to synthetic...probably Pennzoil Platinum. ive heard that you shouldnt use Mobil or PAO oils in these cars.

crap i forgot its sunday. i think our NAPA is closed! owell i will find out tom. if they have VSOT. if not would you guys recommend Maxlife Engine Protector or not?? i cant seem to find any data on this stuff! thanks

If you have to use one I would say use the VSOT. If it is not available I would leave the MLEP alone.

I know how I use it. And once used it. For starters, NAPA will order it for you. 24.00 for a case of 6 15oz. bottles. If you have a Pep Boys, they have it. Usually.

I once poured an entire bottle into four Qt of Mobil 1 0w30. Thickened it up badly. Was wonderfully smooth when warmed up, but got some cold start tap-tap-tap in the mornings (With a Pure1 filter).

Flushed it out in December with dino Super Tech (Walmart brand) 5w30 and an Super Tech filter for a few hundred miles, and then did a 4 QT OC to Havoline 5w30, 1.5oz of VSOT/Qt, and an OEM Hyundai filter. Month and a half later, it's been excellent cold-weather starting, smooth running, no change in gas mileage over untreated Mobil 1.

In this time of Havoline/VSOT, I've added only 1/4 if the 5th quart I purchased for this change. My engine is a Mitsu 1.6 DOHC with 165,000 miles. I've only ever run Mobil 1 with 3000 mile OCI before the tampering with Havoline/VSOT. I have almost 3000 miles on this change, a mix of 50/50 city/high speed (75-85MPH)interstate driving. Might be the VSOT is Moly-Overkill, Havoline has a lot compared to most other oils.

If I could figure out who does UOA, I'll open up the Fumoto-tap and send it along, and post the results.

The MLEP has much less goodies than VSOT. I think poster Tall Paul has more info on the differences. Try private-messaging Paul for faster response.

The maxlife additive has much less moly than VSOT. 1 oz/qt VSOT will add about 75ppm moly and 30 ppm zdp.

VSOT (Blackstone VOA on this site) has 2324 Moly and a viscosity of 75 at 100C. 5 oz VSOT on 5 quarts will raise viscosity about half a cSt at 100C. If M1 has no moly, then you will get about 75 ppm moly as ebaker said.

BoDuke, buy an oil with moly. It;s the best way to get moly if you want it.

Also, there are other ways to thicken oil, like mixing one or two quarts of 10w40 in with your 10w30. Or buy a thicker oil to start with. Maxlife has 300 ppm moly (and Maxlife synthetic is 1 cSt thicker and also has about as much moly).

i run 5w30. but Mobil 1 Extended Performance is a little on the thin side on the 5w30s so i thought i might thicken it up a tad. i have had bad luck with Maxlife oil. i just thought it might be beneficial to add VSOT to my M1? is this not a good idea? i have heard so many good things about it here. i only have 44,000miles, but thought it couldnt hurt? any suggestions. thanks alot for the input guys!

I've run the MLEP with SM Mobil 1 and it seemed to work fine. I used about ten oz. for six quarts of oil. It didn't thicken the oil much because it still came out very thin when I changed it.
