Vr38 built motor

He told me I would blow the seals in the vvt with 15w in the cold. And that was coming for a guy with 1500whp. I’m no where near there tho hahaha
"Blown VVT seals" is not a real thing. No offense but I doubt that guy has ever opened up an engine.

In the case that warranty is out of the window, might as well go with 5w50 if you're concerned. Now would be a great time to buy a case of HPL Supercar 5w50. I'm sure if you called them they'd have more specific recommendations and could possibly even make you a batch of 15w50 for the summer.

I’m a fan of the motul 300v or redline oils. Thanks for the recommendation tho

Please keep in mind that neither Redline nor Motul will work directly with you to find OR blend a custom oil that will completely satisfy your requirements and then some, HPL has done exactly that on this site with members. Depending on my next motorcycle UOA I may also head down that road with HPL, which is incredible for an oil company in this day-and-age. They are also no strangers to built motors and racing given their myriad of race team sponsorships.

My main concern with using a 5w in a built motor spec for 15w, is what negative will it have? They are both a 50 once warmed up. Will I have burning oil with the 5w

It made me think why are you even questioning the recommendation by the people who built your engine? ^This question is for them. If they say Motul Nismo 15W-50 is O.K. for the winter - it's done deal. Your car is not a regular car to worry about the cold stars, especially if it's stored indoors.

Well I start it and drive it in winter. It’s ok to question it because they are in business to make money not build you an engine and have it last 100k miles. Something goes wrong you you need to have it rebuilt for whatever reason you’ll end up going back to them. They won’t be in business if your built motor last 100k miles, even if you drive it like a grandma. Look at the bmw M cars that used 10w60 oem oil and have rod bearing replaced. The oil was too thick for people in cold climates and most switched to 5w40 or 0w40 and the rod bearings lived longer. They were also a poor material.

Oil weight is based on clearances and climate. As long as the oil is a 50wt at operating temperature I should be good.

Why would you give so expensive rebuild to people you don't trust?
Don't they have warranty after the rebuild and what about their business reputation if they do rebuilds and hoping them to fail sooner or later?

It’s not about trusting them or not. A upgraded built motor will never be as reliable as oem motor.

If it was me, I would warm the car up slowly let it idle, drive it slowly get everything warm. Don't beat on the car when it's really cold, more than likely the car will spin anyway. As far as the filter the builder want's flow over filter efficiency.

None of those recommendations apply to the OP's engine.

What I said is that HPL WILL WORK DIRECTLY with you to find or formulate a lubricant for your vehicle, in this case a built motor. Redline and Motul will NOT do that, they only offer what is on the shelf.

The Motul Nismo oil you recommend is not for the R35 GTR in an form.

His shop told him to use Motul 300V

No, however, most engine builders aren't out there producing crap so their motors can still be decently reliable as long as you aren't on the bleeding-edge of the motors design specs.

OP, it seems you need to take a breather on this one. Do a little more oil research and then re-approach the subject. You are getting caught up on aspects of oil that will not be detrimental to your motor. Either do the research or run what the builder recommended to a "T" if it makes you comfortable.

There is a guy on the gtr r35 page that has built motor from same place and uses wix 57202 instead of the 51060 racing filter. He said he has close to 15k miles without any problems from using that filter. What’s your opinion on that? And a lot of guys that track the gtr use oem filter with 15w50
