Built and supercharged Challenger Oil Recom?

The 12 lb supercharger will cause the engine to make HEAT!
Lots of it, and very hot oil with it.
Hot oil thins out, and the 50 is a good bet for the worst conditions it may encounter.
Sure, sometimes a 5-20 would be OK in that engine, but what about when you are USING it? [Hitting the loud pedal]

Mech, a Magnacharger like that with a bypass valve will only make boost at full throttle. Unless he's going full throttle all over town, it's not going to cause the engine to make HEAT! It likely will have the same oil temps as stock until he romps on it.

15w-50 sounds like a solid recommendation for all the things on that motor.

Did you tell them your not going to track race it?

Can you ask them for advice on if the 50 weight is necessary for daily driver use?

My engine builder (who has a great reputation for long life high horsepower engines) is a strong proponent of heavy synthetic blend oil and frequent changes.

The 5W-50 would make a much better year-round oil than the 15W-50, although the M1 is a good oil too. I like the moly and Penetro in the Schaeffers oils.

This oil would be perfect for this engine.

That is a good oil, but there is one thing I'd check into. That oil is labeled as a "Racing Oil". Often times racing oils will have low or no detergents as typically the oil is going to get dumped after a day at the track. That's good if you are in fact using the oil at the track, however if you are going to put it in a daily driver where you are going to dump the oil only after say 5000 miles, you really do want detergents to hold contaminates in suspension. A low or no detergent oil is a danger to sludge up a motor if you are running it for normal oil change intervals.

I didn't look at that particular oil in enough detail to determine whether it is appropriate to run in a daily driver for a normal oil change interval. It may well be fine. Perhaps someone here can give you a definitive answer or you could contact Schaeffer.

Although this oil is labeled a racing oil, it still has a TBN of 7.1, vs a typical TBN of 10 for today's CJ4 diesel rated oils. I have noticed that Schaeffers oils tend to hold their TBN very well and this oil is for daily drivers as well as racing. Sometimes it is worth a little effort to get something better than is found on most retail shelves. I can assure you that this oil is worth looking into. I buy it through a site sponsor named salesrep here. One phone call and it is on my doorstep in a few days. That beats fighting checkout lines at Wal-Mart anyday. M1 15W-50 is a very good oil, but IMO the Schaeffers is better overall and for year round use. I say this based on personal experience using both.

Ok...checked all over today.

Wallyworld has the best price on the M1 15W50 at $6.37 a qt vs. $8.50 a qt at the other guys.

Wallyworld also has a M1 10W40, but it's labeled as a "high mileage" oil.

The 10W40 may be a good compromise, but does the high mileage annotation matter?

Check with some of your local garages and/or speed shops.....

Redline is about 11 or 12 bucks a qt. purchased through them and many of them stock the oil in their shops. A full ester oil will work best in this engine.....however, you can't go wrong with Mobil 1. Life is full of choices!

a good alternative to 50W....

You may even look into AMSOIL 10W-40 100% synthetic. It's a robust formulation with a lot of ZDDP to protect your engine. Wouldn't worry about it contaminating the cats (if you even have any) being a low volatility formulation.

Use this,it`s got 1300ppm of ZDDP:

Hi,
Speedy1975 - This is BITOG and we have many "experts" aboard!

Maybe it's wise to ask Arrington Engines what the minimum HTHS viscosity they require for;

a) race use,
b) for street use

Generally speaking, except for the amount of boost involved, superchargers don't place the same demands on a lubricant that a turbocharger does

15-50 isn't too heavy for TN even in the winter. If the shop that built the motor recommends 15-50 then it sounds to me like you should use 15-50. Mobil 1 15-50 is available almost everywhere, at least out west and it is a very good oil. I used it myself for 12 years and only changhed becuse of issues with my particular engine and climate. It keeps the engine spotless inside as well.

The infatuation with thin oils here on BITOG is a little over the top at times. I know a mechanic on another forum that has been using 15-40 dino diesel oil in his cars, year round for 30 years IN CANADA. The cars sit outside, not in a heated garage. He's never had an ehgine failure.

Years ago I read an article where the builder of V-8's for speed boats recommended straight 40 weight to his customers. He just told them to "warm them up before you put a load on them".

I worked at a shop that built race motors and street motors. What did they recommend? 20-50. They were in Virginia where it gets pretty cold as well.

I would just follow the builders recommendation. 15-50 will work just fine. Just don't start it up on a 30 degree day and take off without it getting up to operating temp. I used the Mobil 1 15-50 down to 10 degrees a few times.

Buying the 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 15w-50 is your best bet. It will not only be the cheapest per quart most likely in that weight but will be your best bang for the buck pretty much.

I've not been able to find the 15W50 M1 in 5quart jugs.

Where are you guys finding it?

Shop that built the motor says to run 15W50

It would be very interesting to hear their line of thinking. I would call them and ask for technical reasons.

The redline 40 grades I think would be fine for everyday use.

Every Walmart Supercenter I`ve been to always has it. They can probably order it for you if your location doesn`t stock it.

As for their recommendation of a 50 weight,I`d stick to it. There`s a Z shop (Specialty Z maybe?) that recommends either 15W50 or 20W50 synthetic on their built up Z32 twin turbos.

+1 to ordering the 5 quart jug at Walmart if they don't stock it. If they have site to store they can order it, and at the price per quart of protection its well worth the wait.
