The 2003 G35 3.5L V-6 engine uses a very small oil filter. The OEM Nissan filter has to be the smallest I've ever seen.
I usually alternate between the OEM and the Pure One 16412 filters (which appear to be a little bigger), depending upon where I have my car serviced. I don't have any technical data on either of these filters, but have come up with some differences in bypass pressure settings and Max Flow rates for others that I'm considering:
K&N HP-1008
Bypass 11-17 psi/no flow rate listed
Amsoil EaO12
Bypass 8-11 psi/no flow rate listed
Wix 51365
Bypass 8-11 psi/Max Flow 9-11 GPM
My first question is "why is the bypass spring set so much higher (11-17 psi) on the K&N over the others (8-11 psi)?". The bypass spring seems to be set at 8-11 psi on most of the other K&N oil filters too.
Also, I noticed that while the 8-11 psi bypass spring in the Wix was pretty universal for their product line, they list the 51365 as having a max flow rate of 9-11 GPM. Most of their other filters seem to fit in the 7-9 GPM range. So, my second question is "why does wix consider more flow to be important for the VQ35DE, and not bypass pressure setting?".
