and yes all new Volvo call for a5 oil.

Pennzoil is not a synthetic? It's not even made from oil. GTL. Read about it.

You haven't mentioned which model you have, but I'm planning on Motul Eco-nergy 5w30 in the V70 I've just bought. It's a high-HTHS A5 (3.41) and not cripplingly expensive. Other models may vary but my owner's manual states that A1/B1 (now superseded by A5/B5) is to be used UNLESS a 0w30 oil is used, in which case it should be A3/B4.

Stop. You sound like another base oil fanboy extremist that goes by "benjy" on this board.

To the OP. Many oils meet A5/B5 (Mobil and Pennzoil are the most prevalent).

But you do. An A5/B5 is specifically called for in the OM.

Yes for fuel economy. Almost 400k km on 5w-40 oil (Volvo s80)

The verbiage in your manual is very different than what we have here. No mention of A3/B4 here whatsoever.

Here it's 5w30 or 10w30 depending on the outside temp. I don't listen to it.

was same oil recommendations on the 2.4 for fuel economy.

My 2016 XC60 has the B4204T9 302 HP engine (twin charged) and specifically requests a5/b5 0w30.
It is currently under warranty and serviced by Volvo every 10k free.
I'm interested in hearing what the forum had to say on this issue.
