hi all, im trying to find out what spec volvos manual gearbox oil(v70, m56 box) is, and what would a suitable alternative be, volvo are not very helpfull on this and no one seems to know the spec, anyone help ,by the way volvo want nearly 20 pounds a litre for it !

in Australia Castrol recommends Syntrans 75w-85 GL4 synthetic lubricant in all V70 manual gearboxes. This is for MY97-01 at least
Castrol's gear oils are NEVER cheap - they ARE amongst the very best you can buy regardless of brand

Pablo - yes Castrol make/or made the "special" Dealer Marketed gear oils for Volvo
Volvo had/have an International deal with EM within their Truck Division - I'm unsure if it is still current

Our MTL-R has been successfully used in those Volvo gearboxes that require a 75W90.
Mola - Volvo doesn't ask for a 75W-90 in the M56. Purely a Volvo Special Fluid.

Thanks for the tip on Castrol's gear lube. I've seen their synthetic in Walmart for a decent price, but have been suspicious about it because of Castrol's use of the word "sythetic" in respect of their Syntec motor oils (except for GC).
Do your comments apply equally to castrol's synthetic gear oils..relative to Redline/M1 etc.?

Note that there are two versions of Syntrans, Syntrans (64.4 cSt @ 40*C, 11.9cSt @ 100*C) and Syntrans M, which is a nominal 75W-90 fluid, but is on the heavy side at 120 cSt @ 40*C, and 18.5cSt @ 100*C. This version is recommended for Rockwell/Spicer heavy transmissions.
I've used it in various gearboxes and its shift quality is excellent, and in the 'boxes I've used it in it has better shift feel than either Redline MTL or a 40/60 M90/MTL brew.

Redline MTL will do fine in an M58 as mine or in your M56.
Rick i have the opposite judgement from mine car XC70 2.5T with M58 that Redline MTL makes better shifting to OEM oil from Volvo.
I know that Castrol is recommending SMX 75w85 for our gearboxes here in Sweden.

OEM fluid is the same for M59, M58, M56.
OEM or Castrol SMX-S is an well suited oil in these gearboxes. Currently im using Redline MTL.
Redline MTL has improved the shifting compared to OEM or Castrol SMX-S.
But im not really satisfied yet so i have by help of Molacule decided to use Specialty formulations MTL-P in mine M58.
Castrols SMX-S base fluid is only polyalfaolenin fluid with some additives according to the datasheet.
SF MTL-P basefluid is polyalfa and poly ester i guess since theres base oils are made from group IV and V.
So by using SF MTL-P i think you have the best from both group IV and V and not only in Castrols SMX-S case group IV.
Im really looking forward to try out SF fluids.
I will also use MTL-R in the bevelgear and in the rear diff theres HDS-5.

Actually, we use our in-house developed "Quad-Ester" base oils with PAO.
