A 1994 volvo comes in for a oil change. Now when he pulls up his car sounds like [censored]. Rought idle, sounds like metal to metal. So he chose a high mileage oil change. We bring it in and I'm looking at the dash lights. Check engine light is on,low oil level light is on, oil pressure light is on. So I'm think probaly two qts low no oil on dipstick. So I check it and of course no oil on dip stick. I pull the oil cap and its just all sludge. The diameter of the filler tube shrunk. So I ask him if he wants to clean out the engine he says yes. Now its not a engine flush I've heard bad things using a full flush with a sludge up engine. So I pour a pint in and add four qts of oil. Now before I start it up I noticed a oil trail from the volvo, so I'm. Thinking probaly has a bad leak. I get under the car and guess what I find. NO OIL FILTER. I ask the customer how long he has been driving he says abou 5 to 10 miles. I'm amazed how this engine did not sieze up. So we do the oil change and car sounded a lot better when it left. I've never put so many service comments in a work order before lol.

Also when we drained it, oil came out horrible very slow. One of my techs stuck there pinky in the drain hole and I guess pushed somthing the oil came out a lot faster!!
Sometimes feel sorry for the abuse these engines take. The I remember its just a machine
 
I drove home a saturn that chucked a hole thru the trans case and ran without fluid at least six months. 5th gear only whined a little.

When I point out low oil to friends/strangers, invariably their answer is "oh I'm about to get it changed." I can't fault WM and other quickie lubes for making customers sign the low oil disclaimer before work starts.
 
I don't understand how 5-10 miles ago he had a filter...what explanation did he give for not having a filter?? If this is true it is an amazing story or just an anomaly.
 
Something about these old engines. Reminds me of my old Datsun B210.(remember those)I bought it used and I wasn't oil savvy. I didn't know anything about car maintainance. One day I decided to get an oil change because on my friend's advise. The mechanic said it had the ORIGINAL oil filter and POSSIBLY the same oil. He was amazed how this car didn't decinigrate.

She ran great for many years later.

He had no explanation. All he said was I think I'm leaking oil. He said a o ring gasket. I just nodded my head and didn't think i t would be a filter
 
Worked at Walmart TLE for a year as a second job.

As I said in another thread, folks had to sign a waiver if there car came in with oil below the 'add' line. About every 4th or 5th car had to have one of those signed for it.

It always held things up, and people were more annoyed that I was wasting time with this than being concerned about their cars....
 
Thank goodness all these owners were running syn oil or their engines would be worst off!

My first car; a 1975 Ford Granada W/302 cid. had leaked/burned oil so bad,I could not keep it full any more. One night coming home, I`m sitting at a traffic light. The car starts to shake a little, (no engine light came on) I had my stereo volume up (I was a teenager) so I turned off the radio. click,click,clack,clack is going on under the hood. I was about 3/4 of a mile from home,so I drove it home,and parked it for the night. The next morning I go out to check it with my Grand Father. I pulled the dipstick; Bone Dry!
 
If there was no oil filter, and he drove 5-10 miles, how could there be any oil left in the engine? The oil pump would have pumped out through the oil filter mount 5 quarts in less than 1 min. He may have been able to drive without oil, but there shoud not have been any oil in that engine, except for maybe 1/2 quart the pump could noy pick up...
 
if the filter was loose it would have dumped its oil some time ago then vibrated off. Wierd. Sabotage?
 
That is amazing lol. I'm surprised the engine didn't seize. Maybe if it were the super hot summer months it would have?

There is no excuse for being that clueless about your car, esp. if your a guy. A woman I can understand, but a guy?? Come on....
 
Pathetic.
Women have no excuse either IMO. If you have a licence to run any type of equipment, you should know basically how it works ie: what is in the owners manual, along with what warning lights/gauges mean. If one doesn't know these basic things they shouldn't be operating the equipment. Driving is a privilege, not a right, otherwise operate something you do understand..like a pedal bike...or a passenger on a bus or taxi.

Not entirely suprised - 302's are tough engines!
 
Thirty years ago my father drove to my house in his 1969 Dodge with a 383 ci engine. I checked his oil and it was bone dry. I added 5 quarts of oil to his car. He told me he had his oil changed, drove from NYC to Philadelphia and back. He hen drove 35 miles to my house. I figure he drove about 240 miles with no oil, most of it on the NJ Turnpike at 65MPH. That car lasted another 6 years till someone stole it.

True, but I have yet to meet a woman that can take care of her car or knows how it works. They turn the key and go. Thats what husbands are for :-)
 
My wife has changed the oil, topped up fluids, checked tires, and keeps the interior vacuumed, exterior clean. She reports any suspicious noises as well.

I guess I should count myself lucky.
 
Had just bought an 87 Trans Am GTA (350) from some dude. Didn't know too muc about cars back then. My mother told me to change the oil as soon as I could. I drove it home, no problems. Next day drove it to a lube joint, and he told me it had zero oil. The total trip was 10 miles. Awesome car.

You should.

All I ask is for my wife to keep the RPM's below 3000 until the water temp gauge is normal.

Not a chance....
