Yes, and that is exactly what America needs - some nutcases blowing tire smoke and revving up their go-straight only car engines on our city streets. Hopefully officer Skippy is paying attention instead of invading DunkinDonuts.

Ford may want to try to figure out how to reach those "college professors" with their products. I bet they have more money to spend than the street racers.

Yeah true...but the Mustang is a symbol of America, muscle cars, the 1960's automotive era....when gas was $.25 a gallon...basically "The good old days" revisited. It is a symbol of what America was and could be some day if the idiots that like Volvo's would go back to Europe where they belong. Let the Chinese hack the bejeezus out of that company. Like I said before...who cares?

Volvo's are for College Professors and socially disassociated geek techo nerds. Mustangs are solely for the cool and retro machine heads that need horsepower coupled to fun enhanced by torque and veiled in a cloud of tire smoke and exhaust.
Ding ding!! I love it! Gotta love Mustangs.

WASHINGTON — Volvo is recalling 17,614 of its 2008-'09 S80, V70 and XC70 vehicles because the engine cooling fan may stop working due to a software programming error in the fan control module. The problem could result in engine failure, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Depending on driving conditions, the customer may experience reduced air conditioning performance, and/or rapid increase in engine coolant temperature," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "This situation may result in loss of cooling system function and engine failure. The driver may not have sufficient time to react to the warning light or the text message in the instrument panel, increasing the risk of a crash."

Volvo dealers will replace the fan control module for free. The recall is expected to begin in July. Owners may contact Volvo at the nearest Chinese Embassy

I doubt it.....go fast car guys have always outspent intellectual types for decades. Think about it. As for Officer Skippy....just don't drag race past DD

College Profesors are usually socialists that are in love with Euro technology, save the whales, save the planet, save the ozone, save the glaciers, save the whatever. They will NEVER be attracted to buying a REAL piece of American iron.

Are you serious? Did you really just say "Volvos are for nerds and Mustangs are for cool people"?

???? Am I just not detecting the sarcasm here? Or maybe you've only been exposed to the wrong college professors.

Reminds me of my first EE prof my freshman year of school. Old crusty guy, probably worked on some secret weapons in WW2.

He was fond of saying if you come up with a value of negative resistance, you got the wrong answer. We used all the negative resistors to win WW2.

Certainly not going to fit in PT1's mold of a college prof.

Maybe some of the liberal arts profs would fit that mold. Engineering profs, not so much.

This is either major tongue-in-cheek or total buffoonery.

I've had '60s and '70s big block V-8 American iron that would whoop up on pansy late model 'stangs all night long. I still have big American iron in my boats. And I now drive Volvos. And I am NOT a professor.

Come to think of it, I drive an R. So I can still whoop up on 95% of the Mustangs out there. I just prefer a car that isn't a oil-leaking rattle trap at 100k, takes me long distances quickly and comfortably in all weather, and has a good chance of saving me in a serious accident. Refinement has its advantages.

I will say that if the Chinese wind up with them, I probably won't buy another one.

That was basically what I was thinking. Engineers and engineering professors are almost by definition going to be interested in a variety of machinery, including performance cars.

Have any actual 1/4 mile times for any of those cars? Most newer performance cars like the 4th gen F-body were faster than anything the automaker had produced en-mass.

The '03/'04 Cobra would rape any stock car from the 60's and 70's with the exception of the TASCA Super BOSS, which hardly classifies as a production vehicle.

The Z06 is massively faster than anything produced during that era as well.

What does your R ET by the way?

Yep, back here in reality those pansy late model Mustangs would be the ones doing most of the "whooping".

The simple truth is the 60's big block cars, stock or lightly modded in the manner most were back in "the day", were relatively slow by today's standards.

Memory enhances those car's capabilities, by and large. A "3/4 race cam" just doesn't get it done anymore.

Yessir. A couple years back I saw a GORGEOUS green and black HEMI Challenger at the drag strip. Car was trailered in, and had a set of ET Drags on what appeared to be Welds or Centerlines on it. Car sounded MEAN.

But it ran low 13's.

And got raped by a bolt-on Fox-body and a Turbo Civic.

Quit picking on the college professors. Volvos are a sign they are overpaid though.

Fairly reliable, but scheduled maintenance, and the occasional replacement part (heaven forbid you get in an accident) would break the mere mortal living on an upper 5 digit annual salary.

As to the '98-'02 F-body, and the new Mustang GTs, they are not only quicker at the drag strip than 99.9% of muscle in it's late 60s/early 70s heyday, they can handle like slot cars if set up properly. Not sure about the Mustang, but the F-body with the M6 transmission can get almost 30 MPG on the highway doing 80 MPH.

I see most Mustangs bought by women who like coupes, not hot rodding guys.

Volvos have definately been associated with nerds for much of their life, however, many Volvos make great luxury cars.

If Chinese business owns Volvo, but lets the experts in Sweeden make the decisions about design and manufacturing, I wouldn't mind buying a Volvo. However, if the name gets stuck on something that is a typical Chinese products, then I will never buy a Volvo.

Uhh.... not on *my* planet. Unless by "old ones" you mean *REALLY* old, as in 50s or 60s. 70s-90s Volvos sucked rope.

Yes, Volvo's are for soccer moms, millenium parents dropping off kids at private schools in their polo & abercrombie clothes. Mustangs are for serious automotive enthusiasts. People who buy Volvo's think they are safe from auto accidents and are saving their children from being crushed to death in a fiery crash.

This total brainwashing by the Volvo marketing department is most likely the number one reason they are being pawned off on the Chinese. In fact this could easily be a secret attempt by Detroit to sabotage the Chinese auto market by turning all of them into millenium helicopter parents hovering over 1 billion children in their Volvo all purpose all knowing all safe padded triple air bagged quadruple reinforced transportation safety pods.
