Volkswagen brake fluid and ATF?

I have 2 separate questions, about VW's. (considering I am a VW owner too now.)

First is there anything special about VW's brake fluid? Reason I ask, I am a Honda Technician, and have loads of un-opened bottles of Honda Brake Fluid. My sister has a 03 Jetta 1.8t with the tiptronic transmission that has 45,000 miles on it. The brake fluid has never been changed, so I am wondering if we should even bother getting VW fluid or if I should just use the honda stuff, which seems to be pretty generic DOT3 that I is made by Mobil.

I have an 05 GTI, that I hardly drive. (Only have 11,000 miles on it currently) So I am curious, as I really don't know too much about VW's. (I may work on hondas and know a lot about them, but would never own one)

From what I remember off the top of my head, they say the ATF last ~100,000 miles. But I remember seeing horror stories from owners that have attempted that. What is a more realistic interval? I'm assuming my sister's car probably could use a transmission service. Is VW ATF that specific, or is there other acceptable fluids? (I know Honda ATF is a PITA) Also anyone have experience flushing these transmissions? Are there just hoses that come undone, or are there special fittings needed to hook up a machine. (I have access to pretty much every BG machine in existence)

VW requires a DOT4 fluid I believe. Try Synpower DOT3/DOT4 from any auto parts store. About $6.00/qt.

The TipTronic transmission is made by Jatco. It takes 3-4 qt for a drain and refill. There is no user serviceable filter, like the Hondas, nor are there transmission lines. The fluid is about $15/L shipped.

DIY guides for servicing a VW TipTronic can be found in the transmission section of VWVortex. These units are also known for solenoid problems that can cause shift problems later in life. Few hundred bucks in parts and an afternoon can fix it.

Don't know about VWs but I suspect they are like my Volvo which takes DOT 4+ or Super DOT4. It is not a brake fluid you will normally find at your auto parts, but ATE Type 200 fits the bill. WorldImpex sells it along with the ATF you need.
