VOA Comparison - Motul Specific 508.00 0W-20 to Amsoil Euro EZT 0W-20

The European oils often meet specs for gasoline and diesel, as in the VW508.00/509.00. Most all diesels use diesel particulate filters in their exhaust, but in Europe, they also use gasoline particulate filters, similar to a catalytic converter, but filtering ash and other particles. Those formulations must have low SAPS oils to keep the ash and other particles from clogging these filters.

As of today, the use of gasoline particulate filters is low in the US, so maybe using a full SAP or the SS formulations would be completely appropriate?

That's exactly right. DPF is the main concern. Amsoil SS SA is 1.05 I believe, so they're not recommended.

Darn the torpedos! I'm beyond worrying about whether it's "approved" or not.

There are many good oils on the market. Currently running the Motul Specific 508, but will most likely switch to the Amsoil Euro 0W30 for the higher viscosity and HTHS.

If anyone's interested and lives in central Texas, I have an unopened 5L jug of Ravenol VSE 0W20, and most of a 1L bottle which was opened for testing, which you can have. I won't be using it.
