VLC is really that good

Been using free version of QuickTime and Real Player (Windows 7) for songs I've downloaded off of youtube, and a couple of weeks ago I decided to give VLC (also free) a try. The sound quality with VLC is amazing compared to the other two. These are .3gp and .mp3 files being pumped through $25 Logitech X140 speakers on my Dell PC. VLC also plays DVDs and video files and while the interface is a tad clumsy I'm really impressed.

One word of caution. Apparently part of VLC's "magic" is doing things with the audio that, according to posts on Dell's website, can blow out your speakers if the volume is set too high so if you do try VLC be warned.
 
VLC works great and plays lots of different files and well as standard DVDs. If you download torrents, VLC player is definitely the way to go.
 
VLC also gets CEA708 closed captions out of MPEG2 transport streams recorded off broadcast TV.

A very versatile player.

If you have multiple sound cards it can route audio out how you want it.
 
also love vlc, my only small gripe is its difficult to jump around via the slider. media player classics is much more friendly in that regard, but again vlc does not need trash codec packs either. amazing stuff.
 
I liked VLC but I use powerDVD due to its hardware acceleration capabilities. I get better image quality on bluray and 1080p MKV files using PowerDVD.
 
VLC's key shortcuts are also nice.

Shift+Arrow Left/Arrow Right Very short jump (3 seconds)
Alt+Arrow Left/Arrow Right Short jump (10 seconds)
Ctrl+Arrow Left/Arrow Right Medium jump (1 minute)
Ctrl+Alt+Arrow Left/Arrow Right Long jump

The letter "P" is for previous file, so if you've loaded several files to listen to and want to back up one, press P.

I can use these in the middle of the night on a laptop. Can't do that with Windows Media Player.

It can't be used as a substitute for Flash, however, HTML5 is taking over Flash content, so you shouldn't have to wait too many more years.

VLC includes, at least on the Linux systems I have it installed on, a web browser plugin. It doesn't not play embedded Flash (tm) garbage, but like another poster said, that format is dying a gradual death to make way for standardized formats.
 
You can use plugins to download embedded flash videos and VLC will play those files perfectly. Great tool if you want to keep some youtube vidz local.

Yup. It handles downloaded .flv videos like a champ. Video Download Helper in Firefox is easy to use and works for nearly any media type I've come across.
 
Woah! I generally just used WMP, but thought I'd try this. The songs have a bit more clarity and pop, stuff that I'd normally hear on my home system.
