Gnome, KDE or any of the other versions of Ubuntu or Mint will work just fine. KDE is prettier and has a more popular photo manager (digikam) and music manager (amarok) although you can mix-and-match Gnome and KDE programs all you want.

I'd suggest Mint over Ubuntu because it comes with not-entirely-legal-to-redistribute codecs installed by default, which saves the user a bit of trouble tracking them down and installing them like they'd have to do with Ubuntu, Windows or Mac.

I don't use a Desktop Environment at all; only Openbox with GTK apps. No panel, no windows decorations.

ubuntu has something called "forbidden extras" or somesuch that includes all the codecs they aren't supposed to include legally. One click install. Also use the precompiled Adobe flash player that linux snobs decry because it's closed-source.

Noone has yet suggested a ctrl alt delete while the file is trying to be played, in case something is maxxing out? Also try cutting video card depth to 16 bit and maybe even a smaller resolution like 1024x768.

I got "media player classic" with a K lite codec pack for winXP and it seems specifically designed for trouble files-- or machines.
