Vitamin D

After reading all of this, all I can say is I have taken D3 now for 6 years most every day. I did not get Covid. Not even a cold or flu in the last 6 years. IMVHO it is the real hero when it comes to maintaining a healthy respiratory system. POI, I do get the flu and covid update shots.

Why don't you just eat the broccoli and mushrooms?
Many people don't eat nearly enough of the foods that contain the nutrients they should be getting and they eat too much of the nutrients they should restrict. You can't regularly go to Waffle House etc for a full breakfast, have a burrito for lunch, and then cream in all the vegetables, good protein, and fat you should have been eating in the first place.

In the case of vitamin D, lack of exposure to sun is a real concern due to occupation. Supplementation may be, and likely is necessary to prevent deficiencies.

Sailors used to commonly get scurvy from the lack of vitamin C before the mid-18th century. Once James Lind, a Royal Navy surgeon found out by trial and error that citrus prevented scurvy, the term Limey was coined and used to denote British sailors who were given citrus rations. Vitamin C was only discovered in the 1930s.

And Captain Cook proved it on his voyages as no one ever died of scurvy. Just everything else!

I’m sure, at least I hope, many are aware that vit d is a fat soluble vitamin. Therefore, you can take too much which can cause unwanted side effects. It is important to have your labs monitored by a physician if supplementing with vit d. I’m not a physician, but I am a registered nurse and have my labs drawn routinely as I take it as well. Hopefully this helps someone who may have been unaware/uninformed.

I'm sure it's come up before because I remember mentioning these points.

Everybody should have their Vitamin D level regularly checked regardless of supplementation because Vitamin D deficiencies are rampant. And yes, people who supplement should get monitored via lavs also. Someone in my family was taking a popular daily multi and because of the crazy high B12 content the B12 level was flagged during routine labs. The doctor started running all sorts of tests, including tests for liver disease and blood cancer. Once this multi was replaced with a one with a lower B12 dose the labs returned to normal. The high B12 level was causing headaches, and nausea. B12 is water-soluble vitamin and people often say you can't take too much of those because excess gets excreted rather than stored. Well, if, for example, kidney fucntion is compromised, the vitamin levels in the blood will simply keep rising to potentially harmgul levels because the person can't excrete the excess properly.

With Vitamin D long-term monitoring is required because D levels change slowly because it takes time to fill and depelete the Vitamin D stores.

I have many times advocated for annual labs for people who consider themselves in good health. Without labs you just don't have data points. Many problems can go undetected for a long time before they manifest physically. People who don't get regular labs may miss everything from metabolic to endocrine problems to developing illnesses.

That's commendable.

People who are unaware mostly don't care and that's why they are uninformed. Advice is generally unwanted and resented. QED is likely incoming.

Glad to see you are well versed, and an active participant, in your own well-being. Everyone should know about the supplements, and or medications, they take and why they take them; I’m a huge proponent of that. We should treat ourselves like we treat our engines 😆

Long Pig.
Cook should not have tried capturing the local king. Historians dispute the claim that cook was eaten by the natives. The Hawaiian islanders were not cannibals. He was stabbed and buried but it makes for a more boring tale.

Giovanni da Verrazzano, the explorer after whom they named the bridge, an Italian explorer, was possibly eaten by Caribs but there's no proof.

I thought his head were smashed with rocks, but could be more fable.

if you do some reading the experts note vitamin D-3 is actually a pro hormone + D-2 is NOT nearly as effective + depending on your body weight your needs vary so get it CHECKED!! i am taking 10000 IU for a LONG time + my last reading was 80 + i am 5-8 + 155 LB 76 YO!! mainstream medicine is content with 30, your choice BUT i dont get any colds due to my nutritional xtras!! of course thats between you + your DOC. IMO DR Sten Ekburg has the BEST info for those who care about being HEALTHY + put some effort into it!!!

Been doing 5000 a day for a long time. Keeps me in the sweet spot.

People who rarely get any sun exposure should get a minimum of 2000-5000 a day.
I have also been taking 5000 iu per day of D3 for a long time, plus I am also outside a lot and get a good amount of sun (I always have a good tan going!) I don’t get sick very often at all
