I went and visit a old friends yesterday, I think he know about this site, anyway went check out his car, and I saw about 50 gallon of oil, not sure about 50 but its alot of gallon oil. He told me how much he save moneys on oil, I understand, but to be real here, I think its not nessary to buy oil every time it on sale, and buy alot of it. While u still have 10+ gallon oil in your garage. that will last u properly 3+ year. At the end you spend more moneys when u dont have to. I think he having problem, cause he told me he alway checking when oil on sale and cant stop buying it. Imma find a free time and will talk to him about this.

for me I buy oil, when it time to change oil, get on advance auto part site or just checking sale section on BITOG heheh. and just spend the moneys when I need too.

and another thing, why peoples have to depress about which oil to use wat best for your engine or use conventional oil over synthetic just to save few dollar.

I was having this problem before, I change oil all the time, like every 3 week or 1 month, cause I feel this oil not good for my engine. Then one day I realise, oil is oil, when company make oil it have to meet the requirement for engine, so pretty much all oil will give u the protection for your engine, some give more protection then other, but not much to be debate about.

and about stop using synthetic oil, and go back to conventional oil just to save few dollar ?

now a day peoples change oil about 6 month or 3-5k miles ? just think about it, for those time u driving, if u stop by fast food drive thru less ( it also good for your body by not eating fast food anyway hehe ), or stop driving to unessary place. then u can save some gas. or quit smoking. those moneys u save by going to fast food drive thru less, stop driving to unessary place, and quit smoking, and other thing will make up few dollar for u to buy synthetic oil, that u know u have the best protection.

for those that obsess about keep buying oil on sale, and stack up their storage. or depress about wat oil is best for your engine. You need stop that habit, you come to this site to relax, look up and read intesting thing, latest update on oil, filter, and other thing, and read other opinion, dont get too depress on oil, wat ever u use is fine, as long u do it on time, no matter wat u use. your engine will be happy.

I know my english is very bad hehehe. Its my third language.

I just thinned out my oil stash, if fact. It was ridiculous. I am only going to use one or two brands and weights. I have enough for several OCs. That's more than enough, and I need the space.

Lots of people like "extended OCIs" so they can have those 1-25 micron contaminants floating around for thousands of extra miles, doing all sorts of wonderful things.

Exactly. I love the people that say, gee, I'm doing 20k OCIs and I can't believe it, I opened up the engine and I found sludge! Uh, duh.

Is it just oil or does he have a mountain of toilet paper and ammo as well?

Does he know about this site?

My oil stash is way down from its high; I have a policy of not paying more than $1/qt, maybe $1.50 or so now. It vindicates my having stashed it, for sure.

I have to force myself to hoard other stuff like I hoard oil; the money savings is good. Spaghetti, canned soda, etc, it get used eventually.

I view my stash differently, I dont have to worry or get consumed with trying to find great deals BECAUSE I have a stash. It acts as a buffer for those dry spells when there are no good deals out there.

As long as you only buy oils that you would actually use and would buy anyway, why not buy on the rebates or closeouts? They are easy to find, just browse the "deals" thread here at BITOG once in a while...no worries.

About 60 US quarts. Down to about 20-25 now.

Update: I finally have a chance to talk to him about his stack of oil. He say it been collecting dust and his wife not happy about that. He say, one day his wife was take her car in valvoline for an oil change, from that day he lost interest on changing the oil. He ask me when I need oil come get it from him, and I suggest him put some on craiglist.

Craigslist is probably a good place to get rid of a stash of oil.

I don't keep much oil around personally. I keep one extra quart just in case I need to top off, but usually I don't end up using it. While my vehicles are always well maintained, I'm pretty spontaneous with maintenance. For example, I don't really schedule oil changes, I just do it when it's convenient at around the time I think (guess) the oil might be due for a change. It's all guess work based on nothing, but it has been working good for me.

The bad part about having a large stash of oil is that the technology keeps advancing. Chances are that someone with a large stash has mostly SL or SM oil.

Oil keeps getting better and we are gradually changing from 5W30 to 5W20 and in the future to 0W20 or 0W10 as the most common recommended grade. I wouldn't want to have a huge stash of 5W30 SL oil to use up right now - even though it will work fine.

That said, it is pretty hard to pass up a jug of Pennzoil conventional SN for $11 even though I don't need it.

True, I still have few quarts Mobil 1 15W50 SL red cap I bought 6-7 years ago in my stash along with a bunch SM and none is SN. It was hard to say no to $4/gallon Valvoline Synpower after rebate or $19 a case Pennzoil Ultra 5W20 or $10 5qt jug Pennzoil Platinum after rebate or 20 quarts Peak oil FAR.

My newest car is 2004, the spec for it is SL. I don't have problem using SL or SM for engines spec'd with SJ and SH.

If that works for you fine. I like to have my oil and filters sitting on my shelf ready to go when I need them. It saves me a LOT of time not needing to run to Walmart or auto parts stores just to get oil. I've had 3 family members die since the beginning of the year and one thing I've come to realize - time is valuable!

I would never say anyone here was "depress" about oil. Oil may be oil but not every oil works as well in one car as other. People come to get opinions from others and learn about oil and automotive things.

Again different strokes for different folks. When my Ford van was new I tried synthetic oil. Now that it is older and I don't drive it as much as I used to - I can't see spending the extra money for synthetic!
I am not poor but I don't see the sense in wasting money. One way you get rich is to watch all your pennies, quarters and dollars. They all add up after a while.

First of all I would never tell people how to spend their money. As I said above - at some point it is NOT worth it to spend extra money on having "the best protection."

I would never presume to tell people how to live their life! Especially if I blatantly bragged on a forum about breaking the law!
But you need to learn that everyone is different and what works for one person may not work for another. If this is how you choose to live your life that's fine - but not everyone is like you!

It really boils down to whether you have the discipline to stop buying or not.

I have about 80 quarts of near free dino and $1 syn because I stocked up. It was down from 90 quarts since the oil price increase. I saved money, and when the oil gets too old, I buy / return from Walmart since the barcode is the same every 2 years or so and use the oldest oil first. Every time I stock up I bought 3 addresses worth for rebate and send all 3 rebates out for 3 addresses at the same time. It doesn't take me a lot of time or a lot of trips to check for discount.

I wouldn't recommend this to people who have no time or bought lots of toys that pile up at home.
