Stockpiling List - Parts For Old Cars

I noticed that most of the parts ordered for my 1968 Pontiac 350 top end engine overhaul was very old stock. Not a lot of demand these days. I actually found a NOS Elgin camshaft from the nineties. Lifters were fairly new production (Hylift Johnson-Butler Perfomance) and the rest of the valvetrain (rockers, timing set, pushrods, and valves) were all NOS parts (Melling). Water pump and gasket set were the only items that were produced current day.

Forum rules for threads like this should require a description of the vehicle, even a picture as if it worth this effort, it is probably interesting. NO TEASING! :)
It's nothing too fancy. It's an old 90s Peugeot. 😃 The idea was to just create an overall general list though for people wanting to keep an old car on the road. Specially rarer ones that don't have a big following and support from specialist companies dedicated to them.

Morning / Afternoon / Evening all!

I have an old car currently (27 years old now). That I am starting to put a lot of effort into getting into a good shape. I am trying to create a list of things that are worth buying now, before they start disappearing completely!

The list I can think of off the top of my head stands as the following, it'd be cool if anyone else could throw in ideas of things that become had to come by as a model stops being around any more.

Service Items
  • Air filters
  • Oil filters
  • Fuel filters
  • Spark / Glow Plugs
  • Couple of auxilliary belts
  • A timing belt & water pump kit
Brakes
  • Caliper seal kits
  • Caliper slide / piston kits
  • Pads
  • A set of discs
Suspension
  • Shock absorbers
  • Springs
  • Anti-roll Linkages
  • A set of bushes
Steering
  • Power steering pump
  • Inner / Outer tie rods
Cooling
  • Thermostat
  • Heater matrix
  • Radiator / oil cooler
Engine
  • Crankshaft pulley
  • Rocker cover gasket set
  • Head gasket set

Can anyone else think of anything to add to the list? Things that may have caused you issue to get hold of on your old cars? It'd be cool to build the "Ultimate guide to futureproofing a classic".

Cheers!
How long are you planning on keeping the vehicle. Is it a true "classic" or just an old car you love?

I am guessing when your kids clean out the garage after your passing there will still be a pile of parts from your list on the shelf.

That may be harder, though from the US I can't adequately judge the French/English parts scenario.

I got a starter for my 1966 Chevy from a parts store three miles away for $42. I don't think that's too bad. 😁

A parts car is great for this if you have the room. You might then get nicer rims or who knows what. Stuff that's nicer than yours but you can't be bothered to pay for it, but have the time on a Saturday to move over to the nice car.

The others are right about the trim, door cards, upholstery (worn out foam), interior bits, computer modules. Yours shouldn't be VIN-tied or need reprogramming but I don't know for sure.

In the US parts seem to go on closeout on Rockauto at about the 25 year mark then the price goes back up. I got struts for my 99 Camry for ten bucks apiece a few years ago. IDK if you have a similar store by you.
