From recollection back in the day, the BMW and Merc start their oil life monitors at 35,000km, and then count down based on operating conditions, consuming 1km for ideal conditions (warm, open road), and more for cold, warmup, idle etc.

(Bit like equivalent operating hours on a Gas Turbine).
