From what I can see here, here's what I observed...
Fram Pros: Widely available, more filter media area. Price is lower at most sites.
Fram Cons: Sloppy gluing, Inlet holes and louvers look more restrictive. Stamped leaf spring instead of coil spring. May be tool long for some Briggs/Kohler/Kawasaki engines to clear steering lnkage.
Kohler Pros: Looks neater and cleaner than Fram - not so sloppy. Nice open inlet holes and holes in the core allowing better flow. Shorter filter can fit into tighter areas that may not allow the FE3614 or equivalent. Coil Spring > Leaf Spring. When compared to a Fram 8172, a much better filter that can be had for the same price or better.
Kohler Cons: Less filter media. Prices higher than FE3614 in stores, if you can find them. (Note that Safford Equipment has the best price I've seen on the Kohler Pro Extended Life at $11.97 plus shipping. You can probably get shipping free with a large enough order.)
