The website to go to is: tioletpaperoilfilter.com. The owner is Ed Greany, a 10 year employee of John Frantz, with a whole new upgraded Frantz bypass filter.New member here. Been reading stuff here for several years.
I have an old Chevy 235 for which bypass filtration…is the the only filtration. I know enough to know that the commonly available modern bypass canister inserts are not very efficient even by full flow standards. The better of the NOS filters (Fram C4P and such) are getting a little scarce.
I intend to keep this thing a long time and need a more sustainable long term solution. I’ve narrowed those to two options:
1) The Cummins-sized spin on bypass mount and any one of the many filters that fit it. (Not sure yet if I’d need to add the 1/16 orifice somewhere)
2) A vintage Frantz setup.
——————————
That’s a bunch of backstory to get to my question(s):
1) Can a guy easily acquire TP of the proper dimensions that fits the vintage Frantz setup? If so, what brand, etc?
3) If not, is the stuff that’s old by the current Frantz marketer a fit in the old system?
Bypass filters were optional equipment on the old cars. On the old Chevy 6s the bypass filter was clamped to the intake manifold. Cant get good filter elements for them now. The optional bypass filter for the flat head Ford V8 canister filter bolted to the head so it was angled. I converted mine to take a 4 1/2 inch diameter roll of Scott 1000 for my Ford diesel tractor. I have half a roll of Viva paper towels in it now. Cut and rewelded the bracket to make it level.some of those old 235 sixes have a really low pressure lube system.. if I remember correctly they used a mix of a splash and bath as well as low pressure lube pump to bearings... guess what I am thinking aloud here is does that type of engine have enough oil pressure to even push a fluid thru a filter? Does the engine in question come equipped with a filter?
What’s wrong with WIX 51100?Bypass filters were optional equipment on the old cars. On the old Chevy 6s the bypass filter was clamped to the intake manifold. Cant get good filter elements for them now.
Not familiar with that Wix The best ones used cotton. The pleated ones were junk. My 64 Rambler American flat head 6 came factory equipped with a pleated bypass fillter. To clean the oil I removed it and installed a FrantzWhat’s wrong with WIX 51100?
Or you could have put one of these in your factory bypass. Not familiar with that Wix The best ones used cotton. The pleated ones were junk. My 64 Rambler American flat head 6 came factory equipped with a pleated bypass fillter. To clean the oil I removed it and installed a Frantz
Not familiar with that.looks like something I could put in my flat head Ford V8 canister filter l set mine up for Scott 1000. It has half a roll of VIVA paper towels in it now.

Welcome!
I would contact the company directly:

I ran a Frantz filter for a few years, but don't presently have a vehicle with enough room in the engine bay to use it. (I presume that's not a an issue with your inline-6.)
As I recall, standard toilet paper rolls did not fit my older system well - I had to add a number of wraps to increase the circumference. You might be best to buy the rolls right from Frantz.
Alternatively, Amsoil has a well-regarded system that can be mounted remotely, and accommodates both a full-flow and a bypass filter.
This is not the dipper rod version. This is the post 1954 type of 235 that had fully pressurized mains and rods. They were not factory equipped with a bypass filter, but vast majority of engines had them dealer installed or aftermarket otherwise. My engine currently runs a bypass
That Retlif would work fine in the old canister filters such as the flat head Ford V8 canister filter on my Ford diesel tractor. Good luck finding one. Its easy to convert the old canister filters to use toilet paper. You need a perforated plate in the bottom for the toilet paper to push down against.. I used the thread end of a full flow. Drilled and deburred extra holes in it.. It will need a spacer under it to put the top of the toilet paper near the top of the canister. You will need about a 2 1/2 inch OD washer to bridge the space between the tp core and the center tube The lid spring and washer must push down on the washer. If the inlet is near the top you can use it. If you want the filter to drain you will need to plug the outlet and add a new outlet. You will need to put a 1/16 inch orific at the inletOr you could have put one of these in your factory bypass.

I used a Perma Cool 189 universal oil cooler sandwich adapter. They work the same for motor oil. Jegs. Summit. Used a self tapping hollow bolt for the outlet The old canister filters didnt drain below the orifice in the center tube. Put a tubeless tire valve in the lid to push out the excess oil before changing. The Ford is 4 1/2 inch ID. Some are smaller. The trick is the oil must go down thru the tp not find a leak around it.That Retlif would work fine in the old canister filters such as the flat head Ford V8 canister filter on my Ford diesel tractor. I prefer the top loaders but the Frantz is a good filter. As far as I know the Frantz paper will fit the old Frantzs. The one I bought in 1964 is the same a s the new ones. The spin on filters are pretty much junk unless you get a very large one. The advantage of the Frantz paper is they fit. You can use toilet paper if you know how. My 64 Rambler American came from the factory with a spin on bypass filter. The oil was always dirty and black To clean the oil I installed a Frantz. The oil turned clear. No frantz paper in those days we used 2 ply.I used a Perma Cool 189 universal oil cooler sandwich adapter. They work the same for motor oil. Jegs. Summit. The Frantz is a good filter. Toilet paper doesnt fit it now. All I use now is Motor Guards Gulf Coast juniors a Australian Jackmaster Classic and a flat head Ford V8 canister filter converted to use Scott 1000. It has half a roll of VIVA paper towels in it now. I am a filter guy. The best new filter is the Australian Jackmaster Classic. Easier to find a used Frantz. Easy to convert the old canister filters to use toilet paper. There are no spin on filters that clean oil as well as toilet paper. The canister filter on my 41 Dodge was the same as a Luberfiner.a Fram that used cotton.Same deal with the air filter -- neither copper mesh or oil bath filter the incoming air particularly well. So easy to convert to paper element that filters much better and lessens the amount of dirt intake to the engine.
