video; snake our scared house sitter.

"5 foot long snake" and "harmless" do not belong in the same sentence. I'd flip out also.

I did uncover a small garter snake the other day, it was curled up under some leaves. It tried to really hard to intimidate me, but I could see the lack of teeth on the first lunge. Once it settled back down I covered him back up--I know snakes can't hear but I let him know it was ok.

Harmless to humans. Non venomous but a terror to rodents. The àlso eat rattlesnakes so if you have gopher snakes you won't have rattlesnakes.

Sincere thanks for that information.

We've large, 4' to 7' long black snakes patrolling the area. They're big garter snakes aka constrictors.
I was around 4 when I saw my first one and it scared me to death.
Just this week the cat was alarmed because one was on a shelf.

Considering where you are and I'm assuming there are rattlers about, it's a good reaction to have. I'd probably leave a human shaped vacuum coming upon a snake like that as I'm in a rattler area, too. It is funny, though! 😁

black snakes are helpful, and they wont bite or mess with you unless you REALLY mess with them. We have had several over the years, and they just slither right next to you.....without a care in the world.

last year, one did kill a chicken, and tried to eat it, but it was to big to eat, so snake was dumb, and the rooster was a puss.

Last July, on our anniversary, my little mutt (purebread Black & Tan Miniature Dachshund) was barking away. I finally went out to see what little lizard or rodent he was barking at. Mutt was in front of me and I did not see anything at first, then spotted the rattlesnake off to my right. At my second look I realized it was not just a rattlesnake, it was a Mohave Green. (Probably Mojave Green in California) I got my rattlesnake tool* and cut its head off. I am in a development and have a block wall all around the back yard, so I am not at all clear about how he got there. Given the distance my dog was keeping from the snake, I think he was alerting us.

My rule on rattlesnakes is: In their back yard, I leave them alone. In my back yard, they die.

I have a cat (Grover) 22lbs with claws that will just kill and eat the snake, cats do not like snakes.

Did it go down like this?
