Verizon is doubling early termination fees

F Verizon. I was a customer (landline and mobile) for a dozen years or so and I STILL have a bad taste in my mouth about the customer service (or lack thereof) about 5 years later.

When I cancelled my mobile service they attempted to extort the disconnection fee out of me even though I'd been a customer for almost 12 years. "Well sir, you auto-renew your commitment every 2 years unless you terminate it in writing." So I refused to pay and told them to kiss my behind. A year or so later I start getting collection calls for the $250 fee and then notice they reported me as a deadbeat to the credit bureaus for refusing to pay it.

If Verizon was the last company on earth with phone/internet service, I still wouldn't do business with them again.

I helped a company build out a datacenter a year ago. They spent about $50 million dollars and bought a whole bunch of fiber connections (OC-3 to OC-48). I specifically spec'ed the location outside of Verizon territory so I wouldn't funnel a penny to those clowns. Never again.

I'm on Rogers & Fido up here and they charge $20/month for every remaining month left in your contract. So 2 years E.T. would cost $480!

Auto renew? What kinda [censored] is that? They put you in a contract without you signing for it?

Hahahaha. Thats awesome.

Wow. I may be ditching Verizon in a year when I get married. I'm on a family plan that's gone month-to-month for 3 months now. IIRC we can tell them we're changing the plan and they can't do anything except make the remaining people sign a new contract.

Tmobile seems to be the best choice for most people. It is a global company.Cell phones provided by TMobile are based on GSM technology, not this weird Verizon,Sprint technology.

You should be able to put any simcard in your phone and keep getting service whereever you are, be it in Japan, Germany or Argentina...

Sucks because I haven't been happy with any cell phone provider whether it be due to pricing, service or products. I think the best I had was Sprint pre-Nextel buyout. I had them for about 6 or 7 years. I had Cingular for 4 years but it was company paid for, AT&T for 3 years and ate their fantastic ETF, T-Mobile for 8 months because of [censored] service(beat their ETF though, I had old letter head from my company and said I was moving permanently to east tim buck to. Now I have Verizon(scanned my paystub for company discount, so that T-Mobile trick won't work.)

And I have to say, Verizon has been giving me probably the WORST service out of them all!! I get 1 bar of service in NEW JERSEY almost anywhere! Phone reboots/crashes etc. Dropped calls and what not as well. I think after this I am just going to a pre-pay phone just for emergencies.

Actually some of them are doing just that and auto renewing. I remember when contracts would just run out and then you just paid as you go and they would try SOOOOOOOOO hard to rope you into another contract. I'd just terminate and hang up the call lol.

I have a Virgin mobile prepaid, $5/mo. I can drop them like anything. They use Sprint's network when Virgin's is unavailable.

Verizon billed me for my old phone # after I transferred it to a new tenant!! I told them to pound sand and it showed up on my credit report years later when I bought my house. Still got the loan.

I like T-Mobile's new Even More Plus plan. No contract at all. You can buy any phone over 20 months on your bill with 0% interest. That's perfect.

carefull with smartphones - ATT just told me that they now require a data plan with all smartphones - and on a family plan that gets mightly expensive. I also have lousy coverage and a lotta dropped calls from att & tmobile.

OK, I'll add my two cents.

1. I have two AT&T Cell phones. I keep AT&T because only them and T-Mobil use the GSM system. (Verizon and Sprint use CDMA)
The GSM is the system used worldwide except for Verizon and Sprint in the US. I've used my AT&T phones in Europe, however the cost is much too high. $1.29 a minute, unless you use their special plan, paying them an extra $5.00 a month, and then out of the goodness of their heart, they only charge you $0.99 a minute. Well I am long past my contract time, but one of my phones was giving me problems. Sure, AT&T will upgrade my phone for "free" but lock me on to another two years. Also, the AT&T phones are "Locked" which means that I can't use someone elses SIM card in the phone. OK, what did I do? I purchased an Unlocked Phone off the internet, removed the SIM Card from the phone that was giving me problems, put it in the unlocked phone, and Voila, everything works. All information still in there, because it is in the SIM card, not the phone. Next time I go to Europe, I will purchase a European SIM Card with a French phone number, put it in my unlocked phone and use that for making calls. I will place my AT&T SIM card back in my older phone and carry that just for incoming calls from the US.

2. Because I have AT&T, I decided I would get an AT&T Air Card for my laptop. Called them, and they sent the aircard, SIM card and battery. Plugged it in the USB port, and I could not get it to work. Called AT&T to see why. THEY HUNG UP ON ME TWICE. (Yes Twice). After trying to talk with their Customer No-Service People, one asked if I programmed the laptop with the disc. WHAT DISC? They told me that I have to load the disc, but they never sent me a disc. OK, they then said to go to my local AT&T store and have them load their disc. Well, the AT&T Aircard did not use a disc. The guy at the local AT&T store worked for two hours trying to get it to work loading the information with a Flash Card. Tried two different Flash Cards. Still could not get it to work. Went home, phoned AT&T and told them that I've had their aircard for four hours, and it does not work. Sent it back and yes, I got my money back. Did I tell you I had Customer NO-Service?

3. A week or so later, I went to Circuit City (remember them?) and got a Verizon Air Card that plugs into the USB port. Loaded the enclosed disc, followed instructions, plugged the air card only when instructed to do so, and Voila, everything works.

4. Because aircards have a "telephone number" I noticed I was getting Text Messages, (to the person who had this number before me) and I could not remove the texts until I had read them. Telephoned Verizon, and I figured I would have problems getting rid of the ability to receive texts, plus get rid of the charges. Easy. The Customer Service Rep told me that she was here to serve me, and she removed the charges, and fixed it so that I would no longer get texts on this aircard. For me, Verizon treated me good. I don't understand why they still use the CDMA system when their owner, Vodafone (Europe) used the GSM system. I told them that when they switch to the GSM system, I will dump AT&T and switch to Verizon. (Verizon says that CDMA is better, but what else could they say, that AT&T (and T-Mobil) system is better??)

If you get a lot of dropped calls on your AT&T, phone them and tell them. They will have you turn your phone off, do their magic, then when you turn your phone back on, it will probably be better. (they sometimes do this for me when I have problems).

In addition, they changed out my SIM cards, free, in both my phones, when they felt that my SIM cards were not working correctly. They contacted the AT&T store and told them to change my SIM cards.

IN THIS RESPECT, THEY DID A GREAT JOB FOR ME. Matter of fact, in my calls to their customer service lately, in the past year, they have been MUCH BETTER than they were previous to that.

only if you get a discount for the phone. If you provide your own phone or buy it out at full price. No data plan requirements.

Regarding unlocking phones, T-Mobile will actually unlock your phone for free if you ask. No one else will! Well ATT is the only other one that can unlock a phone but they won't do it until you're crossed 24months since owning the phone.

When I travel, I pop my SIM out of my BB and put in a local prepaid SIM from whatever country I'm in. No roaming charges. The end.
