Vehicle Sighting - 1976 AMC Pacer

Everything AMC made was weird and odd. My parents had an outdated AMC in the mid 1980s except driveline, Eagle station wagon that was Outback of early 1980s.

I attended the Feb. 1975 Daytona 500 Nascar race. As part of the pre-race hoopla, AMC had 50 just made AMC Pacers lapping the track for some time. I suppose they had just been released or were going to be soon after. The crowd was speechless at first. I can't imagine what AMC had to pay for that stunt.

It was almost like seeing the Tucker reappear out of thin air.

AMC did have some nice features, I liked the flush door handles. Some of their cars had two hood latches, one in each corner to stop hood flutter. Honda Accord are you listening!

Three cheers for the Pacer's "modern look".
What I cannot get over was that the clowns, yes, clowns with red noses and big shoes, who drew this car up wanted a speedy car with a Wankel engine-a completely new/unproven technology at the time. When GM failed to deliver the engine, AMC installed a I6 you couldn't remove the valve cover from without removing the engine.

You have to always keep this stuff in mind when you bow before car companies.
They don't actually care about what they make.

You bought a Vega...you got shafted...they don't care.

I always wanted a 1970 AMC Ambassador.

Buddy growing up had a Mazda with a rotary (not an RX-7, possibly an RX-3?). Reasonably quick, very good at fogging for mosquitoes! Better the Pacer had the 6, even though they hard to work on.
