Has anybody seen VR1 10W30 bottles with an API SP "reference" yet (not a donut, just a reference note)? Two year old video from Lake Speed Jr. states VR1 is using SP-based additive package, plus added ZDDP. However, every bottle I've seen in stores and received from Amazon up to this week, still references API SL on the label. Mobil 1 15W50 bottles have had SP reference for some time.

The answer to your title appears to be No.
based on every bottle picture I could find on valvoline.com

The VR1 10W-30 has too much phosphorus for API SP approval. Grades thicker than 10W-30, like the Mobil 1 15W-50, are exempt from the phosphorus limit, so they can be SP approved so long as they meet all of the other requirements.

I think what he was basing his hypothesis on was the low calcium levels, which are within the SP range.....and this:
I think what Lake is saying is that the main add pack is SP with a high dose of ZDDP. Not that it's for modern car engines.
