Probably because Synpower was never really that good of a synthetic until the last 2 years or so.

Is that so ?

I bought 6 cases of Synpower about 2 years ago from Kragen for less than $1/qt. I did not use any yet so I don't know how it compares with PP. I do like PP a lot, specially it's cheaper than M1.

I believe so. Synpower has only "recently" been approved for GM 4718M, and has been improved a lot over the last 2 years. Previously, it was just a very average oil.

I was just talking about how the performance of M1 isn't much better than other other oils for such a price hike and I used AMS as a source as well, here ya go:

6 tests total, 4 of them M1 was beat by another brand.

How many times in the top 5 (not counting AMS):
Mobil 1- 6
Motorcraft- 4
Kendall- 3
Trop Artic- 3
Valvoline- 6
Pennzoil- 4
Castrol- 2
Quaker State- 2

I want to reiterate that M1 is a good oil, however, when you look at the price disparity of M1 and other brands compared to performance of M1 and other brands not much more performance is being purchased for the additional money.

Valvoline Maxlife Full Synthetic is available at Kragen and OReilly auto parts. There is no Valvoline Maxlife Synpower.

The $20.xx was not the synpower maxlife. It was just the synpower.

Valvoline's website does have a Synpower Maxlife (A version of the Synpower that's for high mileage engines about 75K+ miles). I haven't seen it in 4 of the local walmarts.

3 Kragen locations didn't have any in the gallon sizes for sure. They might have some in quarts, but didn't really check.

EDIT to my previous post:
The product in question is not branded as Synpower maxlife, but as Full Synthetic Maxlife. It is on the full synthetic section of Valvoline's website to which synpower belongs.

Wow...that's a great price if one factors in the $20 rebate from valvoline. Comes in around $3 per quart.

U can do better though. Do the O'Reilly's & Valvoline special going on right now. Then send off for the $25 rebate to Valvoline. It works out to .67 cents a quart! You can do it on multiple cars too. I've done it on one already and doing another this weekend.

My valvetrain is quieter with Synpower than with any other oil I've tried in recent memory including PP. I get piston slap until the engine is half warmed up and that's it. My next oil change I'm going to change to M1 because after tracking oil use it for years I found out it burns the least in my engine but that's the only reason for the change
