Valvoline Synpower 10W30 SL

Hi guys!

Just a quick question, would this stuff be safe to use in a modified small block 350 engine?

It's a carburated motor with a warmed over hydraulic flat tappet cam.

The car doesn't get driven very often but when it is, I run it up to operating temp.

I bought ten quarts of the stuff on sale last year.

With all the talk recently about SM rated oils & flat tappet cams, I'm a little concerned.

Any other opinions? I was reading in another thread about a guy with a '69 Mustang and some of you suggested he use a HDEO.

Should I run something like that instead? Maybe something like Valvoline Racing 20W50?

I'm thinking that 20w50 may be a little thick. I'd rather use something a litte lighter.

A 15w40 HDEO would work as would Mobil 1 10w-40 EP. I don't see a problem with the Valvoline that you have but feel free to experiment.

Are you using higher than stock valve spring pressure?

To be safe, just don't do extended drains. MolaKule or Terry might be better able to give you a safe mileage limit.

So, the Valvo stuff will be O.K. to use, since it's SL? What should I get after I run out?

The cam that I have in it is the Comp Cams Extrme Energy 268, it's pretty tame, I think.

Also, since the thing is carburated, I wasn't planning on extending OCI, worried about fuel dilution.

I'm just looking to run a decent synthetic in it. It tends to run a little too hot for my liking.

Coolant temp's stay at 210* on the factory gauge.

Delo 400,Rotella ,Schaffers would be great. Feul dilution is relative to the carb jetting.

Valvoline Synpower is a very good oil, but for less $$$ try the HDEO that (Steve S) listed above.

I'm using Delo 400 in my 96' Vette

Assuming that you have already done the proper break in period with conventional oil, I would say the synpower would be a good choice.

Yes, the motor has about 1k on it right now.

So, one year changes would be fine, then. The car's street only. No drag racing, yet.

One more thing, where would I find Delo 400? Walmart perhaps?

Chevy, Delo can be found at Wally's, CSK(Checker/Kragen/Schucks), Pep Boys, Costco or Autozone.
