Bought a couple of jugs of Valvoline SynPower 5w30 last time it was on sale at AAP and put it in the two Volvo 940 turbos I have. This is my first experience with Valvoline oil in many years. These cars have previously been run on GC (which I can no longer find locally) and PP, and would use no more (and usually somewhat less) than a quart over a 5K OCI. Both cars have now used over a quart of SynPower in about 1,500 miles. Has anyone else noticed an increase in consumption using this oil? I think I'm going to try some Rotella T-syn in them next to see if that quiets down the consumption (have used it before with good results).

Id try Maxlife oil.
Ive never tried the synpower oil before, but I am using synpower PSF, brake fluid, and gear oil without and problems.

There's nothing wrong with Synpower; you just got the wrong viscosity.

5W-40 Synpower flows so well down the funnel, I can't even imagine the flow of 5w30; it's beyond my comprehension.

I'm running 5w20 sypower, no leaking or burning. My car calls for 5w20. I have a feeling his volvo calls for 5w30. Rotella 5w40 isn't too hard to find, but I'd imagine 5w40 sypower is.

5W-40 Synpower is readily available at NAPA.

No matter what the recommended viscosity is, if the engine is consuming oil, it's too thin. Besides that, Volvos have always been run on xxW-40 from what I gather.

Well, I got the Synpower half-off sale too, but got enough 20W-50 to add one quart to the 5w30 at oil change time to thicken it up a little. Works for me. Maxlife is another good, possibly better option.

That's not always the case. I've witnessed less consumption switching from 5w30 to 5W-20. The only explanation I have - is that 5W-20s are generally better-built oils.

Here goes...when switching oils one tends to discover one's engine will consume more...I don't know why just know it is so...In my embarrassing little lifetime I have owned two vehicles that did not leak oil or burn oil...A 1988 Ranger with 2.0L that I believe was designed by Mazda...and a 1982 BMW 320i...everything else I have owned consumes/consumed oil...My 2002 Prizm goes through a half quart every two to three thousand miles...when I change brands consumption goes up...consumption occurs mostly when a lot of highway miles have been achieved...

Give it some time, however Synpower was very volatile when I put it on the grill.

It performs great in my Titan. My buddy drag races a 2000 HP, 2 stages of NOS, 630 CID V8. This weekend he ran 7.24 at 186 MPH in the 1/4. He uses 5w30 Synpower in that drag car.
