Valvoline Restore & Protect 5w-30 (Gonna Take a Chance)

If anyone missed it, they have 50 reviews posted at the bottom of the page from some kind of influencer program

https://shop.valvolineglobal.com/co...re-protect-full-synthetic-motor-oil-sae-5w-30

Feels like I just read a bunch of misleading reviews. Some almost seem written by AI.

If anyone from Valvoline reads this, this influencer program is shameful when many here show authentic and knowledgable enthusiasm (ex: threads dissecting an oil filter).

Top tier in the shelf-stock world, in my mind means best of everything, similar to how PUP has the most stars on Pennzoil’s charts when comparing the non-HM oils. There’s nothing in Valvoline’s advertising or docs so far that implies VRP will last as long or longer as VEP, at least that I’ve seen. Maybe there is? It’s hard to justify a $40 MSRP for a 5-10k oil IMO.
No one was talking top tier for all oils. Just Valvoline hierarchy.

Yeah its kinda weird me out with the staged and fake reviews. At least have actual people running the oil for 5K with some oil drain and valve cover pics, then I'd find it to be believable. I'll stick with HPL from here on out since integrity is very important in the age of expensive new and used vehicles. While I do think they make good oil, their marketing practices and SDS opaqueness doesn't make it very convincing product. Better off waiting until the oil gets vetted here by others. For now it just looks like another Mobil 1 wannabe meme oil. Thanks Valvoline lol.

Went to the local autozone and got me some.
I'll send a sample off virgin sample off to JG Lubricant Sevices Inc tomorrow. They use Oil Analyzers Inc. I'll get both TBN & TAN.

Very curious on the results and oxidation value to see how much ester is in the oil.
May use it for my beater car. Currently running hpl euro 5w40 in the truck recommended from David ward for the trucks use.

Anyone here wants to take a whiff out of the Valvoline Restore & Protect jug to see if there is a faint sweet and fruity smell in it?
Somebody mentioned somewhere here it actually smelled a bit like gear oil IIRC. The old Castrol Magnatec did smell kind of fruity, speculation was due to esters which is where I think you were going?

I think I have some of that in my garage, from when I changed the neighbors oil, it's like a half a quart left of 0w-20, if that was the synthetic oil in the green bottle, that Castrol had for a short time..

Yep, was a darling on here for value and amazing UOAs in EcoBoost engines. Stayed in grade better than about anything else and for less. I ran quite a bit and really liked it.

Now replaced by GTX full synthetic which doesn’t get nearly as much love on here. I am tempted to try it but have not yet.

There were two iterations - it was the semi that oxidized early for me

That's disappointing, unless the esters are in very small concentration. Well If I ever get my hands on a jug I'll let ya know if it does.

My local Walmarts have stopped carrying Castro GTX Full Synthetic (silver bottle) due to lack of sales.

Ok marketing aside the claim is based on testing per the referenced IIIH Testing: Piston Deposit.
They didn't just pull the claim out of a hat.
They can't be called out, sure, but you should expect some kind of result. Time will tell as more information or real world experience comes to be.
This oil is absolutely nothing special and that will be seen very quickly.

That’s surprising, between the Castrol name and price you’d figure it would be a good seller at Walmart. I happened to see earlier today that they are still offering it on line for (for now).

Castrol should have left well enough alone. Speculation here was it was cutting too much into Edge sales. Who knows? 🤷‍♂️

I was surprised as well. Yes, my local Walmart websites still show it for sale online, too.

Valvoline just as capable as any other blender. The difference lies in the market they operate in. You're not going to be able to sell an oil of HPL/Amsoil/Red Line quality at Walmart. But in terms of capabilities, they have their own engine lab that can run every sequence engine test. They do it all in-house. This idea they can't come up with something different is pretty naive. How do you think they caught those post-Katrina Mobil 1 blends that weren't doing that great in the IVA?

How did this post go on for 20 pages? The original poster tells us he's putting this oil into a spanking new Ford. If I were in the aisle at Walmart and saw an oil whose tagline is "restore and protect," my first though would be "What old beater on its last legs would I put this into."
