Valvoline Restore and Protect

Do we have a before picture otherwise it’s a oil that was run with or without any change.

We did not, thankfully the oil pan didn’t leak until this mileage. The classic Schrodinger’s oil efficacy in that regard, maybe it helped and maybe it didn’t . But I also don’t make a claim of any change; just a visual condition and what preceded it.

“Schrodinger’s oil efficacy.”🤣

What’s next? “Heisenberg’s cleanliness uncertainty principle?”

I have to make a correction on my original post/announcement. The mileage should have been 141,900 and 142,000 respectively.

Today (5/14/25) @ 142,026, I dumped out the old and in with the new, Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 with an STP S4967. Filled 4-1/2 qts to reach the top mark.

For personal reasons, I decided to perform an oil filter change only at 144,736, OF mileage is 2710. Over the past 2710 miles, I have added about 1-1/2 qts. Which is less consumption that what I started with.

Something happened with my last 1 qt add to the top mark. I left the filler cap out, and over the next 2 days, it was running without a cap. By the time I discovered this, the dip stick was halfway between top and bottom mark. I estimate a loss of a half qt. Doh! And what a mess in the engine bay.

Here is the STP S4967 opened. Lots of crud in there, must be doing some cleaning. I haven’t gotten a chance to extract the media. I replaced it with a Wix 57145.

Howdy folks. It’s probably buried in here somewhere, but I’ll never find it 🤷‍♂️ A couple Valvoline Restore and Protect questions… First, it looks to me like the 0w20 has slightly better specs than the 5w20. If I’m right, it’s a no-brainer to pick the zero right? Second, it seems to me that if you get a moderate to high mileage car and you don’t know a lot about the oil change history (or maybe even if you do), running the 4 OCIs of Valvoline Restore and Protect is a no-brainer, assuming there’s a suitable viscosity? Thank!

Just did my last oil change with Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20 and going to Valvoline Restore and Protect after the winter.
2014 Scion tC (167K miles)
Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20
OEM Toyota cartridge filter 04152-YZZA1

I have about 1.5 quarter oil consumption for 5,000 miles and will report on that after I star using Valvoline Restore and Protect. Planning to use it for at least 4 OCI. :)

I don't know which viscosity is best for you. I do know there is a little confusion about the use of Valvoline Restore and protect. You do need 4 oil and filter changes to make a difference. Here is the part that some people don't realize. According to the info I got from Valvoline tech. support, you can start using their Valvoline Restore and Protect in a brand-new car off the show room floor if you want. Valvoline says it is the BEST engine oil they make for automotive engines, and it can be used in brand new cars if you want to. In other words, if you want to use that Valvoline Restore and Protect in your next brand-new car and use it until you junk it at 400,000 miles you can, you would be using the best car oil they sell.

Wait untill someone says you should use ESP because it is the most anti Rotella oil there is.

Jokes aside, that is precisely their claim, that Valvoline Restore and Protect is not only great for cleaning, but also protecting from there on.
At that point I think we could argue if it protects better than another top tier oil from another reputable brand, but running it a few OCIs in a recently purchased used car does sound like a nobrainer to me as well. I recently bought a vehicle with 1.5k miles on the odometer, I simply presume it is engine must be clean enough regardless of the oil change history (which one would not expect many with that milage). But apart from that, Valvoline Restore and Protect gets its place in "welcome to the family" pack for all my used purchases from here on.

Perfect choice for old or new. If I were buying a new car today (especially GDI) that didn't require a Euro spec and was doing OEM drains, I'd be grabbing Valvoline Restore and Protect. I think it may also help mitigate intake valve deposits.

For now until they develop something else.

Prior to Valvoline Restore and Protect I can't recall using any Valvoline except some maxlife transmission fluid. With others results and OA's I now have Valvoline Restore and Protect in 5 vehicles and plan to stick with it. At some point I do need to use up other stash, that will be getting some Castrol Edge added to it due to rebate and lack of willpower.

For non severe 5k oci’s it’s awfully hard to beat R&P and a Mobil 1 oil filter all at Walmart. One stop shop. Start from day one and never worry about engine deposits.

I respect that when people change their actions as new information comes in.

I think it's a no brainer to pick the 5W-30 personally. And I also agree that if there is unclear oil change history or any concern about it, I'd just run 4 OCIs of Valvoline Restore and Protect.

Regardless that this Valvoline page stays unedited forever:
https://www.valvolineglobal.com/en/advanced-full-synthetic-sae-20w-50/

I still find wrong information on their website like these two oils have the same PDS (one supposed to be synthetic):

Also the PDS of the VR1 20W-50 look almost identical. the only real difference is the Noack % loss. Is it possible both oils to have the sameCCS?

Here is my second Valvoline Restore and Protect project. This is my BIL 2007 Camry 2.4. It’s got an oil consumption issue, similar to DW 2007 RAV4 2.4, same engine.

2007 Camry, not exactly sure what was originally put in from the last OC, but he did say he added several qt bottles of Chevron Supreme 20w-50 over the last few additions. Yikes! The oil that came out, black as unrefined crude out of the ground black. Tuxedo black?

What went in, Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w-30, before I knew he added/uses 20w-50. I told him to add Valvoline Restore and Protect 10w-40 moving forward. <- Is this okay? And oil filter was Wix 57145xp.

The so-called shop he went to didn’t even provide a proper crush washer. A couple of dipstick pics for reference, including the fill cap and fill hole. 🤞
