Valvoline Restore and Protect

@oilstained - for the Camry another option along the way, maybe right before next oil change is BG EPR and follow directions. Maybe not even drain it and go right to Berryman's Piston soak. Drain the oil and cleaners mixture, replace filter. Fill it with whatever cheapest stuff, run for a couple hundred miles, drain, replace filter, fill with Valvoline Restore and Protect.

Prior to all the newer cleaners, soaks etc., my dad did at least 1x per year a Gunk metal can Motor Flush. Not sure if it actually did anything but smell and thin the oil. We were always good with oil changes so not as much to build up. Along the same lines as BG EPR, LiquiMoly has a flush, I think Amsoil does and others.

Follow piston soak suggestions of maybe some oil in the cylinders after and some hand cranking to lubricate.

If sludge is really an issue there is also BG Dynamic if you watch some of the reviews/videos on that.

This was on my bottle of Valvoline Restore and Protect. Voted Product of the year, 2025 by consumers.

Well deserved. While firms downgrade their base oils one after another (yes, i am looking at you Mobil 1), or keep using the same old school formulation from decades ago (Redline entered the chat), Valvoline came out with a major innovation that adds a functionality beyond anything else on the market, and placed it affordable. I salute them.

And i cannot stop but wonder, if a boutique came up with this cleaning power, we all would be praising it would be willingly to pay more than their most expensive offering

Such as some Mobil 1 varieties using Group III bases like Valvoline is doing?

Indeed. Like you did, completely ignoring performance and focusing on composition. You were the one that brought up base stock in a thread just to prove some tangential point about your dislike for Exxon-Mobil.
So many assumptions

Looking closer it may not have a built in o-ring, but then again I can see it if I looking for that. But you would have seen it. I went looking for the common Dorman brand that are sold at many places and Amazon had a bunch of them 6 years ago. But they seem to be pushing all the "you add the seal washer ones" now. I replaced my drain plug I think with the first year of owning my car if remember right in 2019 and I change out oil in my car every 3,000 miles/73,000 miles now and 6-7 years. I still have that drain plug and it doesn't leak a bit. Amazon does sell something like it with extra seals. But mine is vulcanized in the bolt head face.

No, this plug doesn’t have a built-in o-ring. None of the products you list comes close to what I pulled out. It doesn’t have a groove. The reason it didn’t leak was because of the silicone sealant.

I think he's referring to them taking ester out of Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0W-40, perhaps. But your point about formulating for performance still stands.

I believe even AMSOIL (the only "100% synthetic"!©) has group III now in their SS line, allegedly.
Where did you hear this? I would be very surprised if Amsoil used group 3 in their SS line

I read it on here recently. I'll look but probably hard to find. Regardless, whatever the source, I think it's all speculation because AMSOIL doesn't discuss their base oil composition outside of OE and XL which are confirmed group III.

Some curious observations:

  • 66k miles on my Honda 1.5T engine ('23 Civic Si). Used HPL for the first several oil changes than switched to Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20 for the next ~45k miles. Sometimes the oil would smell a bit like fuel but no noticeable oil dilution
  • Tried Valvoline Restore and Protect 0w20 on my last oil change. Level was right in the middle of lower and upper fill marks. After about 600 miles I noticed the level was a quart high and my oil smelled like gas. Siphoned some out to slightly below the upper fill mark.
  • After some hard driving (200 miles), the oil was at the minimum fill mark, added a tiny bit of oil to bring it to the middle. (engine has never burned a drop of oil)
  • maybe the Valvoline Restore and Protect was loosening up some carbon in the rings and caused some weird effect? Level is now stable.
another thing I noticed is how quiet the engine idles now. And seems much smoother than Mobil 1 at high RPMs.

A few people have reported here increased oil burning initially on Valvoline Restore and Protect that then goes back to baseline and then eventually away.

Any reason you're not running 5W-30?

I would switch to Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30 for at least the recommended four oci then if it was me, I would stay on the Valvoline Restore and Protect after that. I am just going by all the things I have read and watched about the Valvoline Restore and Protect so far. Keep in mind, Valvoline Restore and Protect is considered to be by Valvoline Engineers to be their "Premium" automotive engine oil formulation. You don't need to have a dirty engine to use it, you can use it from the day the car comes off the show room floor. Some people don't realize that, from what I have read.

I was going to make a short trip down to TJ.
Hear me out, I have a plan.
You fly me from Sydney Australia to TJ Mexico, and then by way of compensation I bring you a 6L jug of Valvoline Restore and Protect 10W40. We have a cerveza together, talk oil, then go home.
