Valvoline Restore and Protect piston cleaning: IIIH test vs. normal driving

It seems a bit strange to me that so many "oil addicts" on BITOG are dealing with oil consumption issues. Are BITOGes slacking on their maintenance?

That being said, I've been running Valvoline Restore and Protect in our five vehicles from the time it was released. They range from 15+ year old, to brand new vehicles. 27 miles to 189k. It's good oil that is available locally, and $30 for a jug. It has been proven to do what it claims, and would seem like a logical choice on low mileage newer engines as a preventative measure to avoid ever having to try to "fix" stuck rings and dirty engines, etc in the future. It does all of this without any added effort or additional products, time, cost. We are all going to change our oil as normal practice, why not use an oil that gives us the best chance over the life of the vehicle? Sounds like a no-brainer to me.

Some engines are just natural oil burners. The guy who owns the local stihl dealer said his Subaru used oil from the day he bought it new. I don’t know that Valvoline Restore and Protect would fix a known issue. My best friend ditched his bmw for the same problem. The dealer actually gave him a qt of oil with every oil change to keep it topped off. Luckily my oldest car with 123k doesn’t use a drop, which is a hindrance when I’ve slightly overfilled it lol.

It's a great question we've discussed here a bit. I think a lot of times we buy used cars with issues, and we also help out with maintenance for other vehicles too.

I hear that a lot about Subarus. I think it is piston ring deposits though. @GW. 's experience is a good example. Even with 5000 mi OCI on a "good" OTS oil, she burned. Doesn't short trip either but has severe conditions, hence the 5000 mi OCIs. Valvoline Restore and Protect fixed it. Mobil 1 ESP has kept the oil burning at bay.

I think for Subarus, you have to use quality oil. People who run AMSOIL and high quality Euro oils have no issues. Lots of reports of 10k OCIs with AMSOIL and no issues going to 400k. Issues seem to develop with API spec oils, but not for everyone, as there are people running Supertech with no issues. It's strange. I haven't figured it out yet.

...Also, you drive a hybrid car, so I'll cut those miles at least half way. Meaning the car run 5,000 miles but the engine run about 2,500 because the car is a hybrid and ICE doesn't run 100% of the time. Most likely it runs 50% of the time.

If you currently have 15,000 miles with Valvoline Restore and Protect I would count them as about 7,500.
That's an incorrect guess, as pasadena_commut explained in post #195.
People who aren't familiar with hybrids make a lot of strange assumptions.

What is not true that a hybrid ICE run 50% of the time? Then how many percent does it work, 100%?
I've been driven a hybrid and the ICE is at least 50% at work.
