I was wanting to see if anyone had any results with either one of these oils. Or any Blackstone lab data. They both are the same price at auto zone.

Based on what I've read here, the mineral castrol m-cycle oil does not hold up well in service. It shears quite a bit quite quickly. Not sure about the Valvoline one.

If you want to stick with mineral oil, some of the HDEO oils like Rotella T or Delo seem to hold up a lot better.

I've got a sport bike it calls for 10w40 but rotella comes in 15w40. Or 5w40. Would that hurt my bike any. Cause my clutches and stuff are in the same oil.

Both Rotella Triple Protection 15w40 and Rotella T6 are JASO-MA rated. They will NOT harm your clutch.

Keep reading in the Motorcycle and/or ATV forum(s).

I use Valvoline 20W-50 MC dino and it's my favorite oil...and this is after using both Amsoil and Rotella....don't know about Castrol...

The dino Castrol is just junk oil. You would be much better with the Valvoline. But as mentioned Rotella 15w40 is excellent, JASO MA rated for wet clutches, and has been proven over and over to work well in motorcycles needing a 40 weight oil.

You may use either oil because no one has first hand knowledge
just how many miles your engine will last before over
haul... you'll hear warnings about this oil over that oil but no
one is at the point of wearing out their engines to say for
sure... most riders grow tired of the bike and trade it in
before reaching the end of the line and needing over haul...

That's a good point, BLS.

The castrol in tests shows a lot of corrosion. and dont even pass the tests.. I would use the Valvoline or anything but the castrol motorcycle oils.. and if u are not going to ride it much put that in the thinking when choosing. good luck

The "high end" Castrol motorcycle oils are very good. the $5/quart stuff should be avoided.

The 15W-40 Rotella is a great choice and it's reasonably-priced and available almost anywhere. If you're not riding in temperatures under 40 degrees then it's just fine.

The Rotella 5W-40 also works well, even below freezing - but it will shear a bit when compared to the 15W-40.

Both are JASO-MA rated for wet clutches. (there's an echo in here ;-))

define "high end" and also "very good", please.

because i have tested several of the castrol products (both MS and not MS spec) and have experienced both ends of the spectrum on quality.

steve

p.s. i 1000% agree with your SRT (both blue and white jug) comments and have proven it as well.

i have not tested delo 5w40, but i have 15w40. and its almost as good as SRT. on the 15w40s let price be your guide.

in a shared sump, 5w40 doesnt last that long. gets chewed to pieces and out of grade fast. not castrol gtx fast (i mean nobody can blink that fast) but it dies a fast death.

some oils can handle being in a shared sump and most cannot.
in my testing the 5w40s and 10w40s cannot.

steve

The common wisdom is that oil with a LOT of VI improver does not fare well in shared sump engines, but it is the tranny which causes the problem. So, the question is how does the VI improver in T6 5-40 hold up in such service. I will use it in a BMW which does not share the oil, but not in my son's Nighthawk. It may be that there isn't enough VI in the T6 to cause a problem, or that it doesn't matter if you change it often. Perhaps someone will obtain that date. It would be good to know.

The word on the forum is that it holds up fine in non shared sump systems, but in shared sump systems it can shear out of grade relatively soon versus the 15w40 flavor.

Rotella 5w40 in my VFR was a 30 weight by 1100 miles, now if all one wants is 30 weight protection for 2,000 miles or so, that would be a great substitute for 30 weight oil.

Im not sure why Honda has dropped to recommending 30 weights, probably energy conservation, more than anything else.

i use an almost free castrol dino 15w40 HDEO which is only SG/CH4 rated. i run it for only 1250miles before changing it out. i have never experience any bad shifting or indication that the oil have run out of life.

to me is not which oil to run but what is your servicing OCI and plan. at the moment, as i intend to keep my OCI short in my small bike so i just use something low cost.

With the huge improvements made for the MA2 oils for to protect clutches and engines, I wouldn't touch any oil that doesn't say MA2 on it. Better yet if it is MA2 and SM.

That does not mean its better to be honest. I have seen the Kendall motorcycle oil and eventhough it has a higher API rating, it has a terrible additive package that looks more like a PCMO oil.
